They are basing the first heli in Cork to be manned 5 days a week. Day time and fair weather conditions only, as in no fog flying. The crew wil be the pilot and a Paramedic/AP and if possible a Doctor. The Medics will be voluntary. No one know what training will be provided for the medics. The HSE and IrCG have no hand in the running of the heli and have ruled out helping it. I, as many more have been aproached as EMTs to also help out. Problem with Cork base is that CUH has no landing pad and so an Ambulance has to do transfer from Airport to CUH. Pain

The big question of liability for volunteer paramedics has yet to be answered. The HSE is not backing this project so any HSE Paramedic who volunteers for this should seek advice regarding insurance.
Any Paramedic working in the South of Ireland are required to be state registered with PHECC.

Helicopters cannot just land and take off anywhere they like so regarding being used as a HEMS is another issue yet to be clarified.

I'm in no way against a HEMS but I think we're a long way off that yet as there are a lot of questions yet to be answered.

Currently the Irish Air Corp and the Coast Guard provide an excellent service.

I think today in the Examiner, it stated 210 kids were transfered to Dublin for surgery last year. Sohow many others? And in the HSE's plan to centralise services (another topic) is an Air Ambulance not a basic transport option? The Coast Guard and Air Corps seem to be emergency only. (I stand to be corrected).

So that alone, should a service which funds itself not be supported by the state in other ways?

And is this not a way to test the water for HEMS?

More importantly why does the main trauma hospital for Munster not have a helo pad? So tell me why we are building a private hospital at the CUH?

I think this is a great idea and it should be supported
