First step is to talk to your local guards and inform them of your intentions and ask what's your best course of action. On the same path myself, so recently had a word and was told that because my security had already been inspected and signed off as being substantial, there wouldn't be any need for another visit. Someone else might not demand a visit one way or the other. Either way, best talk to your local boys. Good luck.

I had to get a monitored alarm..eircom phonewatch..1200 quid there abouts.
"2 inch angle iron dyno bolted around my gunsafe and thats about it..And dont forget to offer the garda when he visits for inspection if he wants a hot drop of tea!!!!!

Thats about it. But im sure each parish is differant..best bit is give them a call..

Hi new to boards but I'm only after collecting my brand new remmington 700 .243 last night. I have a deer licence which Garda asked if I had. He took copy of licence and asked about security ( I have safe and alarm) if you meet these requirements you should have no problem. By the way a eight week wait at the moment for licence

    hey lads

in the same boat as poster above, I already have a 223 and shotgun but im plannin on gettin into deer stalking after a couple of weekends out during the winter.

I know what rifle im goin for just not sure what caliber yet. 270 v 308 however dont want to start that debate!!

Anyway, i was hoping to have the rifle before the season starts in september to get some target time with it, I have the permission letters for shooting and have them photocopied,
If i were to bring them to the station and send them in with my application for a rifle would they take this into account and issue a cert?
I knnow the deer licences wont be out till august/sept and dont want to be applying for a licence then and haven to wait 6/8 weeks for the cert.

    Is it worth a try?

    thanks

When someone starting out asks about rifles and calibres, I would suggest that you start by buying the best optics you can afford first, then add a rifle.

Most rifles will shoot better than the person behind them, it's the glass which is really important.

So get a Schmidt & Bender, Swarovski or Zeiss scope.

We can talk forever about calibres, get a .243, 25-06, .270 or 30-06 and practise before the season.

I broke with the Trad mode of European scopes. Nightforce 5.5-20x56 Illuminated Ret.
Shot My first deer with that scope in almost dfarkness dec 12 2008. Oh yeah mounted on a rem .308 VTR, Total price €2600 Approx S/H scope with heavy duty Burris Mounts.

I had an issue with screws loosening on my previous mounts. Use Burris mounts as they have three allen head fastening system. Very secure.

I had CPO in house to get large calibre 2001, he was abit sticky but got licence eventually. i was 21 at the time hence the delay.
