    Hey guys,

Pretty straight forward question. I've got white macbook, 2.4ghz, 2gb ram. I've checked via crucials checker thing, and actually physically checked myself and i currently have 1 stick of 2gb in my mac. What i'm wondering is, in order to upgrade to 4gb, am i better off selling this stick and getting a matching kit, or should i just buy the extra 2gb stick that crucial reccommends and just slot it in. I know when it comes to it matchin sticks can perform better.

The 2gb stick in my macbook at the min is Samsung if that makes any difference....

    Hi Skidmcmarx,

It depends on how particular you are I guess.

Firstly, you are going to be upgrading from 2GB to 4GB and you will notice a speed increase anyway.

Secondly, it is recommended that you match the speed for optimal performance. I wouldn't worry about the brand really, if you can get another 2GB stick at the same speed/timings it should be fine.

Just to add to that -

Basically you will be gaining fractions of a second by matching the sticks.
Now, I don't see this as a huge factor when you consider the read/write times to your hard drive. You will get to a point where the hard drive is holding back the RAM so I wouldn't worry about it.

Maybe worth a look if you interested in how it works:

    Thanks guys.

Thats exactly what i needed to know. At the min the RAM i've chosen from crucial is the exact speed/timing of the Samsung 2gb in my macbook. And with regards to the HDD i recently upgraded to a 320gb 7200rpm and definitly noticed an increase in boot times etc. I left the RAM til last just because i never got around to asking the question in my OP before now.

Thanks alot for ye're replies guys. Much appreciated

Well when all the RAM is matched and it's good quality, the only bottleneck is usually the HD.
