HD problem

Girlfriend dropped my external HD onto the floor. It dropped from the top of the computer case. It still makes the sound when you plug in the USB cable, but it doesn't regognise it as a working device. It comes up as unknown. It's a pretty good external with a Sata connection. I would like to fix it if at all possible. Any suggestions or is there any point trying?

get a usb to sata kit, from peats or maplins, open the hd casing ,connect the drive to the pc.cost 35euro approx.open the drive first, the internal sata cable to the hd may be just disconnected from the case pcb.if data is valuable back it up,an external 500meg hd is now only 70euro in peats.

Otherwise use the Hirens boot cd to try and recover it
