    Howdy peoples,

I've booked in to go to Cork next year and am so excited as I fell in love with the campus when I was first on it. However, I don't have a clue what course to do really, nothing has really hit me like "BAM...I want to do that!".

I'm thinking of going into Finance, its a little more open than accounting, easier to get the points, maybe I can write a little for a few newspapers while I study and get a job in the financial news part of a paper, but if that doesn't work out I could be an accountant or something along those lines so I'd have something with good money to fall back on, which would be nice. Maybe have commerce as a second choice...but then I'd have to go around with all the ugg-wearing, fake tanned and scary people, right ? I'm so not up for that, I'd like to be hanging around with my own crowd since I'll be going with essentially nobody I know from here. Also, I'm doing all sciences and no business subjects - problem ?

I would LOVE to do Speech and Language Therapy, since I love languages and it sounds really rewarding and fun, but at this stage I haven't a hope of getting the points, realistically.

So that leaves me with the sciences, which would be good, I like science, I am doing all 3 for Leaving and I assume you'd get a fairly varied bunch inside which would be fun, not to mention the fact that a science degree would give me a chance of doing a post-grad in Medicine (which was my original plan, until I broke my leg the day of the exam).

    Opinions, anyone ?

I think my problem is that I like everything....but nothing in particular !

No arts degrees need apply ! I'd like a job, thanks ;)

Go for science, you'll get to pick lots of different modules anyway, you seem to like it enough to do it for the leaving :) and a solid science degree is always handy, plus if you did want to do finance, my two friends graduated in physics both ended up in banks. :)

You can look up the books of modules online and see what kind of mix you'll have in different course, might see something shiny!

If your doing all sciences, then maybe you should stick with science. Speech and language therapy involves minor levels of biology, from my understanding of it..
If you wanna do somethin businessy I'd suggest BIS (plug my own course like;)) A lot of the same subjects as Commerce, with more IS modules and less fake tan!!

I am shocked an horrified at that description of Commerce!

Commerce (especially with a language) is a great course and covers far more areas than BIS. :)

No, it doesn't and that is a perfect description of Commerce.Do BIS, if you like computers and want a good chance at getting a job in business.

    Do somethin in science though

People really underestimate an arts degree !! People assume that students like myself who do arts are wasters and all end up working in mc donalds at the end of it ! May I remind you that there are accountants , brokers...... currently working in mac donald's right now !!!
It's the quality of your degree that really counts ! If I decided to do the bare amount to get by yes , that would be a complete waste of time and money. However if I get a 2:1 or first class I can then go and do a post grad in occupational therapy or hopefully medicine myself !
Don't under estimate arts , it's a great course with a lot of variety ! You say you love languages , my friend studied 3 languages in 1st year irish , french and german . If you come out with a good grade you could then go on and do speech and language therapy as a post grad !!

Also , you do not need to do a science related under graduate degree in order to get into graduate entry medicine . Anyone can apply once you have a 2:1 / 1st class degree and get a good grade in the GAMSAT exam . Hope this helps "Jeebus " !!

He obviously doesn't know the situation with our class..... One person has secured a job I think and even those with 2:1s and Firsts from previous years are struggling to find jobs because the jobs just are not there.

To reiterate, don't do Elec Eng. Go have fun instead and work a lot less to get the equivalent results in Elec Eng.

ok id say go for something like biochem loads of options there

but please dont insult people doing arts degrees, i am currently doing a BA in early childhood studies and i am gauranteed(sp) a job when i graduate and be in management in two years of that, plus a ton of post grad options - so really arts degrees can be great for a job

I would be wary of finance unless you're really into that sort of thing. If your not, it could get very heavy. Commerce is good in that you get to a bit of everything and then you can choose whether to go down the accounting/finance/economics route or a Marketing/Management or a mixture of both.

    :D

Commerce is a great course, and some of us don't wear fake tan and Uggs - we're guys.

And you don't need to worry about not having done any business classes, most of the first year modules are 'Introduction to...'

    I think this is why people have problems with arts students;

At clubs AGM last night , a presidential candidate proclaimed that he could commit to the post as he is an arts student, therefore has 'plenty of time' to spend on it, and that he 'doesn't give a f***' about my course, if I fail it I'll just repeat next year, I've only been to one..no..two lectures in the last two weeks'
    etc.

I realise that this is slightly off topic and this issue has probably been discussed ad nauseum (is that how you say it?) but I think it relates to OP's question of which course to choose.
Not that he has to do arts or anything!

ok i know you dont want arts but if you really want to do speech and language therapy you can do it as a post grad from early childhood studies, your hours arent too intense and its actually quite good fun, plus you get practically a year off college for placement
