Highlights questions

I want to get highlights next time I go to the hairdressers. Haven't really had them before. I have dark brown, fine hair - would anyone have any pictures I could take in of classy looking, non tacky, not stripy highlights? What shades look good with dark brown hair? I was thinking light brown, caramel type stuff..

Also, do I have anything to worry about re allergic reactions? I see on all the L'Oreal home dye products they have a warning about black henna tattoos (that if you've had one you could be allergic to the dye) and I had one.

hi - i have kinda blondy caramel ones in mine - i had light brown hair but i got a semi-permanent overall colour which is darker brown and my hair is also pretty fine. I would advise you not to get the blonde ones so thick if you know what i mean (that's if you decide to get them) - i think they are nicer when they are more subtle and thinnner - also if you decide to get layers make sure you don't get them cut too short at the back - thats what i got the last time, a few weeks back, and they are way too short for fine hair - i find it hard enough to style my hair as it is and now when it gets greasy (which happens a lot!) it keeps falling into my eyes - so annoying!

I'm gonna make sure my hairdresser doesn't cut them as short the next time....:D

Anyway hope that helped - kind went off on a rant there...

Can anyone recommend a hairdresser/salon that does good highlights? They can be a bit 'hit and miss' sometimes..

if you have never had a colour on your hair before ( or it's been a long time. over a year) then the salon should give you a skin test first but not many places bother with this, yes it's not that common to find someone that is allergic i've never come across anyone, but the day someone does get an allergic reaction and hasn't done a skin test prior, salon is going to be in big trouble.

As for what colour to go for it comes down to how much time & money you have. The lighter you go the more your roots are going to show.
As for looking like a zebra crossing this will come down to the stylist that does your hair. Some will weave thicker than others. Say when you go in for your consultation that you want fine weaves, You could also get 2 different colour in your hair this will help break the colour up since you have dark hair.

What you mentioned, light caramel, brown i think would suit you well. All the salons will have colour charts so you can look and choose what colours that you want, and the stylist will advise you as well.

    A few pics i found:

Wow it's hard to find pics lol most are blonded up to bits ( me included lol )

    Anyway hope i helped

  • Thanks for the advice!

I don't know why so many stylists do this, but even when I ask for a fine weave, I get the evenly placed lines. Why would anyone think that looks good? It looks so stupid. I want more random ones of different thickness.

I like the ones you posted, thanks. I'm hoping the stylist will advise me based on my skin tone, I'm very olive skinned/tan so anything too blond would look ridiculous. Like Jessica's hair here, I think it just washes her out

whereas this http://www.aolcdn.com/pmms/productpagemovies/02/00/2499611 is a lot nicer. I hope I don't end up with something awful!

I went to Tony and Guy and got blonde hihglights in my hair. The girl took sections of my hair to highlight but then only took about half the hair in each section by using a tail comb to pull out the hair to dye. It's hard to describe how she did it but I didn't get any stripes at all. I'd recommend going there.

then if you say to the stylist you want randon highlights with different thickness she should know what you are talking about. Instead of doing a normal t-bar or 1/2 head she will just scatter them around your head.

And what the other person described is called slicing, It's gives a more defined and bolder colour cause your taking more of the hair together to be coloured than you would just weaving. But if you just wanted a subtle change random weaving would be the way to go.
