Was just in getting a sandwich in spar?

They need to go back to Hygiene School. One of them was putting a new air freshener in the bin. Then without changing her gloves comes over and starts handling food.

In the words of Paulie Walnuts "Disgusting".

I saw someone drop cheese in the canteen put it in the bin, using there hands to open a bin that had a foot peddle then go to make me a panini. Your meant to saw no thanks, or ask them to change there gloves.

People in spar are usually really good. I know the Irish ladies have always seemed to be really anal about it, and I have seen them give out to the others that work there. One even makes sure to change her gloves if she sees me and was handling eggs (allergic).

    Just remember say no! :)

They do a roast joint everyday and you can get hot meat in a roll, lovely stuff

Better selection then dcu spar, theres only so many potatoe wedges and chicken fillet rolls you can eat

I remember getting a wedge roll there about two years ago and sat my self down in the henry gratton to chow on it. About a half hour later I was puking in the toilets of said building. When I went over to get water in the spar after talking to god on the big white telephone they had shut down the hot counter completely for "some" reason.

I never bought anything off that counter again. Granted who knows if the two events were linked but ive had a mental block on it since.

I never understood all the hassle with the Spar shop. Before I came to DCU everyone was telling me to boycott the place, saying their places are too expensive and they don't have a great selection of choices, but I think they're pretty good. Prices are actually fairly reasonable given the monopoly they have in the college and I've never had any problems in terms of hygiene or anything.

Nah food poising normally takes a few hours to present itself, very seldom do they appear after half an hour

Food posioning in "some" cases can take up to a few hours to develop but you cant put a time frame on something like that. It quite feesible for someone to bring something back up two minutes after ingestion.

I cant help but see a pattern linking the events of that day...

At the same time, yeah I like the spar, never had a problem with the pirces there

Never had a problem with the place myself. Price-wise I don't think they're exploiting students in anyway whatsoever and hygiene-wise I always thought they've been pretty good.

Going to Shanowen spar is all well and good for some people and I'm sure there are people who do need to save every cent, but imo the 20 or more minutes it would take to walk to Shanowen, get a roll and then walk back to DCU isn't worth the pittance saved and is pointless from my perspective. I'd much prefer to spend a few extra cent for the convenience of having a spar right on campus.

And as for cleanliness, DCU Spar looks no different in terms of hygiene from Shanowen Spar (they both have the exact same systems in place such as gloves, hand wash etc.) so I'd say the majority of issues with hygiene are caused by human-error which can happen anywhere.

In the OP's case you just simply have to voice your concern, I'm sure the employee would benefit from being made aware they have made a mistake.

I much prefer the food at the DCU Spar to the Shanowen one. In fact, there's no other roll counter quite like it! :D

    Centra Paninis ftw.

You should simply request a glove change if you see a problem.

I work behind a food counter myself (Subway) and we were given a rigorous hygiene training session, im sure its the way for all deli workers, and if theyre doing something wrong they should be put in their place so it doesnt keep happening.

Part of the best thing about deli counters is that you can see them prepare the food for you, so you can trust it, but this depends on them sticking to proper hygiene procedures.

Ive personally never had any problems in either Spar on campus or Shanowen though really.

I agree with Blacon, I work in subway as well and only working there now, do i appreciate the amount of hygiene checks that I have to go through, constantly changing gloves, disinfectant hand wash and all that...

Just be grateful that at deli's you actually see the food being made and can probably see if they are doing something unhygenic (in which..you should say it to them!!) rather than if your food is being prepared behind closed doors in a kitchen where anything could have happened....

it's very foolish to think that any deli maintains high hygiene standards.

It's very foolish to bash a business you know nothing about. At a minimum there are standards like HACCP, which I'm sure you must know alot about since you seem to speak with such authortiy on the matter. Unless you are a fool and know nothing about food retail.

It's very foolish to state something without having some kind of evidence to back it up. I used to work for various retailers, and while I haven't been working on the deli itself, I knew a lot of stuff that was going on there.

WTF are you talking about? Are you talking to yourself there or me?

I think you should back up what your saying with evidence from a large sample of food multiples.

I find it amazing you are still backing up your statement that no dei on this island has high hygiene standards. I hope you are not getting confused with hygine standards and employee behaviour because that would be foolish too. :D

I've never experienced any issues with the SPAR in DCU when I was at college there. Maybe things have changed, but the SM seemed to run a good team when I was there.

Don't get confused - I didn't mean every single deli in Ireland. There are very good, well run, high end and usually more expensive delis, which DO FOLLOW hygiene standards very carefully. What I mean is usually represented in small corner shop delis (there are exceptions to that as well).

BTW I've never named or pointed any particular shop/business. I've never mentioned SPAR in my posts, so don't waste your breath.

    The evidence I have:

    1) I worked at shop, I saw and I know.
    2) e.g. once was in Dunnes Stores Deli on George's Street. I saw how deli staff spilt some gravy on the floor. I came there two days later - the gravy spot was still on the floor.
    3) Many other small incidents etc...

    HEALTH WARNING!!!
I beg to differ on that one! I was reaquainted with my 5 star dinner in Bolivia 3 years ago and I barely made it outside the restaurant door where I projectiled while walking down the road!!! What was really weird is that I had eaten there maybe 4 times because the food was so great. I am also a veggie, so t'was pasta and veg a la concrete that made me ill! I was up all night, ended up falling asleep with my head on the toilet bowl and was in bed, on liquids for 2 days. Believe me... it can happen, anyone, anywhere!!!
