The DS is a fantastic handheld console, loads of excellent games, but limited in every other capacity.

The PSP is a very good piece of hardware, but for gaming, its not great (limited number of games, no second thumbstick). The custom firmware that is available really opens it up.

    Overall, I prefer the DS.

Totally depends on the users needs and expectations. They are in no way similar except for the fact that they both can used to play games (of totally different types)

    DS
i tend to think that the psp is for 12-16 year old , while the DS is for under 12's

    *cough*

I'm 34 with two PSP's and love them. Rarely use them for gaming, though.

As for the original question, it's apples and oranges. The PSP can't really be compared to the DS [g/f has one - aged 29]. DS for [casual] gaming. PSP for all round entertainment.

If you have a PS3, then a PSP is a no brainer too.

Is one thumbstick not better than none?

Well the PSP is better. If thats your question no one will argue with that, , is it more usefull or suited to yourself then thats a totally different question.

Perhaps this would be a question, or opinion, better asked on the Main games section but looking at the sales figures of each suggests there must be something to each of them.

    DS
Being the proud owner of neither I'd be inclined to head in the PSP direction. My brother has both, and in terms of what it can do, the PSP is head and shoulders above the DS. It's a far more powerful machine, can handle movies, tv shows, internet browsing and all that jazz.

But if you're not very tech savvy, the DS could be good too. Very much depends on whether you're a dedicated gamer or a casual gamer.

Heh, maybe not. In the times I've played PSP the single thumbstick has bugged me. Maybe it's a matter of getting used to, but playing Syphon Filter and having to use the buttons to move while also using the single thumbstick is very very frustrating.

I made the same poll in the Nintendo forum to try to get a balanced opinion

One of them only plays games, and they are on average 40mb.

The other one has much bigger games, better graphics, better sounds, can play music, can play videos, can easily go online, and much much much more.

I pity the people who say the DS is better.

It doesn't have the better games though and the DS really does have a massive back catalogue of excellent games that dwarves the PSP.

    DS
I own a PSP, infact I'm using it to post this message. My brothers have DS's, so I've played both. The PSP is so much better IMO. In terms of what it can do, I prefer the games for it, and I can't stand the DS's touchscreen.

    Are you counting GBA games?

Just out of curosity what excellent DS games would there be? I can think of New mario, mario kart, phoenix wright and the castlevania ones. Haven't played FF3 so can't comment.

PSP has GoW, Metal Gear Portable Ops, Castlevania, papaton, FF tactics and Killzone.

EDIT: this isn't a fanboy statement. I have both. I just want to make sure i haven't missed out on something on the DS.

Totally agree with that, for me though the DS is better, has a lot of unique masterpieces like Phantom Hourglass that could not be copied on any other console. PSP is obviously more powerful than the DS and has internet and music etc. but in terms of gaming (which afterall is what these are about) i think the DS is better.

Nope not counting GBA games which are also excellent. You don't even have the tip of the ice berg there with your list.

    Anyway you have:

    Dragon Quest
    Dragon Quest Rocket Slime
    Contra 4
    Meteos
    Viewtiful Joe
    Mario and Luigi
    Elite Beat Agents
    Ouendan 1 + 2
    Chrono Trigger
    Sonic Rush
    Picross
    Advance Wars
    the world ends with you
    Locks Quest
    Soul Bubbles
    Fire Emblem
    Bangai-O
    Trackmania
Pokemon (don't snigger, pokemon is awesome)

I could go on and on. The thing about these games is that they offer something completely different to what the home consoles offer usually. Other than a handful of games the PSP seems to be trying to replicate the home console experience but not doing as well. The PSP is a fine machine with great games but for me it comes down to the games and not the other featurs and the DS just blows it away. Still I do love my PSP.

    You should look out for:
    The World Ends With You
    Elite Beat Agents
    Peggle DS
Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum (Edit: OMG Retr0 we should totally battle)
    FFIV
    Trauma Centre
    Professor Layton
    Advance Wars

I would disagree that the DS has better games than the PSP, I think the gaming experience each offers is a little different and therefore it's worth owning both if you like handhelds. I do prefer my PSP, but that's based on the fact that the games released for it are just more my kind of thing. I wouldn't go so far as to say that PSP games are better than DS, they're just different.

There are certain things that I think can only work on the PSP, proper racing games like Wipeout and Burnout for example. Sure Mario Kart DS is fun but it doesn't strike the same chord that playing WipeOut Pulse does. On the other hand, Trauma Centre is something that perfectly suits the DS experience and couldn't be replicated on another console (haven't played the Wii version).

Ive a DS and an r4 card, never had to spend money on a game. Is there something similar for the PSP actually??
Ive never really used the psp so i cant really compare them.

Can't believe this thread went on so long without mentioning these. Brilliant games.

The DS, for what it is, is a fantastic piece of kit. It is not built for web browsing or viewing videos. It is a games machine, and at that, it works fantastically.

The PSP is a much more advanced piece of hardware. It can also do a lot more. However, the music player aspect is not very good, with a crap grouping feature. Video support is also lacking and the web browser is woeful. Unlike on the DS, for what the PSP is designed for, it does not pull them off well.

I am a techno-phile so of course I have a PSP, two actually. But it needs some big improvements, not to compete with the DS, as I said, they have different focuses, but to actually pull off what it is trying to do.

There is only one reason i think the psp is better then my DS, because my psp has Suikoden 2 on it :pac:

Don't get me started on that game. It's just so good! I do like the PS1 emulation of the custom firmware I have to say :)
