    Hey all,

So I need to borrow a bike box/bag to transport my bike by plane at the start of April for a few days. I am prepared to buy one but then I thought "Sure maybe I could borrow a boardsie one in exchange for some alcohol?"

So, a slab of your prefered special offer supermarket brew (ladies get elevated to a nice bottle of wine) and I can pick-up/collect the box/bag.

    Any takers?

The bag? I bought it in a store ;)
It's the CRC labeled one. You can borrow it for nowt.

It is now in very small pieces so it could fit in the green bin...

Also, I was unsure about transporting a carbon bike by cardboard, those baggage handlers might not be very up on the euro-rules.

You can have mine but you will have to go pick it up from Blorgs who has it at the moment for his trip next week.

    Mine is an actual Box.

Can I pick a bottle of whatever I want? ... no way I let an irish guy pick wine for me :P

Ha! Thanks Raam, but I do insist on giving you that cake or beer, would make me feel better.

I wrapped my entire frame with bubble wrap. I would suggest you do this if using the soft bag. I also detach the rear derailleur from the frame and tape it to the chainstay, tucked away. Handlerbars off and tucked away. Pedals off. Seat post out. Wheels in the wheelbags and inside the main bag protecting the frame. Easy peasy.

Also, those plastic fork jammer things are useful. One in the front, one in the back.

I think the members of the cycling forum have a very special skill of being able to de-rail a thread in about 5 posts. I love you guys.

Not my fault ... I said I had a bike box for Dirk ... but I prefer biscuits rather than wine...

I don't have a bike box but I would like some wine :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,318 ✭✭✭✭Raam

OK, so it's bikkies for Caroline, any aul wine for LDB, new world wine for KenMc, Old world wine for Tiny and cake for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,509 ✭✭✭✭DirkVoodoo

Ok ok, so thanks to Raam and Caroline for the offers, I'll send one of ye a PM at the end of march to arrange collection. Just wanted to see if I could get one in time.

So cake/biscuits it is (and wine for LDB)

    Thanks guys!

Oh, I think the bulk of wine we import now comes from Oz don't it? As long as it gets you nicely toasted, who cares how it was made. Antifreeze is good for what ails you.

    Malbec preferably.
    kthxbye

Getting back to the whole bike box issue, does anyone know where i would be able to buy a cheap bike box, wondering is CRC the cheapest around?
Also where would i get bubble wrap?? Saw Raam mentioned it and it seems like a good idea!!

Oh and porter cake is just wrong!! :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,509 ✭✭✭✭DirkVoodoo

I was looking at the ones on Wiggle, the DHB ones seem pretty reasonable.

Of course my problem is having nowhere to store it after I buy it, so renting or borrowing for me.

i feel so let down. came in here expecting some genius way of transporting beer on a bike. but alas no...:(. suppose it'll just stay going into the back pack, 24 cans are very heavy!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 302 ✭✭steinone

Plug up the holes in the frame and pour it down the seattube:D

I too was disappointed with this thread. Rack is the only way to go for box of beer really, just stick it on top and bungee over it. Wine will go into traditional-style water bottle cages- Bordeaux style bottles only, thank god I don't have much of a taste for Burgundy. Tacx Tao cages will not transport wine reliably.

@Dirk- if you have a hard case you don't need bubble wrap, it might be useful with a soft case though. Personally I would be somewhat wary of a soft case at all though.

racks are un-euro though, no? i apoogise in advance if i haev just opened a can of worms...

I apologies for the misleading title, I should thrown in "in exchange for..." into the title.

Yeah hardcase is all I would trust really, I hadn't even thought of the rear mech, thanks for that Raam.
