I spent 3 weeks there a little over a year ago and loved it. Defo visit Koh Samui, a few days in Bangkok is loads.
www.sawadee.com is a good site for reference. The majestic grande hotel (it might be grande majestic, its on sukumvit anyway) is a 5 star hotel and you can stay in a mid-price room for about 70 euro a night.

If you've never been to Asia before then you probably won't like Bangkok. (I saw it in a very different light when I came from Calcutta the second time!). Still, give it a couple of days at the start.

You might want to go up to Chiang Mai and the surrounding area for a bit. People generally go trekking/rafting/elephant riding etc. up here. On the way to Chiang Mai, I stopped in Ayuthaya and Lopburi. The former has a lot of really cool temples. We got a boat ride that took us around to all of them. I'd definitely recommend it. We only stopped in Lopburi for the day before catching the night train to Chiang Mai. Nice enough place (Lopbuti) and has an entertaining local troop of monkeys. Pai, about four hours from Chiang Mai, is a nice chilled out hippy kind of place. You can also do the same activities here as in Chiang Mai but there's less of a manic conveyor belt feel. I did an overnight rafting trip from here which was great.

The only other part I've been to is a few of the islands in the south. My favourite is definitely Koh Tao. I would highly recommend you do a diving course here. It's fairly cheap, a great experience and you come out of it with a qualification. You might be able to catch a Full Moon party on Koh Phangan. Personally, I think that island is a kip, especially Haad Rin, the site of the Full Moon. Good laugh though. Make sure to book a good but in advance around the times of these parties. Koh Phi Phi on the other side is also fantastic and has no roads! Some very nice beaches. More expensive than Tao, Phangan though.

    That should be loads. Enjoy!
