I'm thinking of getting a compact digital camera for carrying while on the bike. I'm looking for something cheapish as I already have a SLR but it's too big for carrying on the bike.

    Any recommendations are welcome.

This arrived for me yesterday :)

I got it based on this site (who I trust for decent advise and suchlike), and it seems pretty perfect for what I wanted -small and easy to use.

Oh, and for memory cards, I got 2 of these -8gigs of high speed memory for 21 quid delivered!

    I'm interested.
I know there is a photography section over there <
but there might be cyclists with cycling-suitable cameras. If you don't want to name a make/model give some general guidelines like how many pixels, size, cost, and stuff.

This arrived for me yesterday :)

SNAP -- I got one of those two. I can throughly recommend it. I use it for photos of the new child and the video function is really good. I haven't used it cycling yet but I will soon. You can trust me about cameras.. I am a photographer as well..

Then I made a good choice, and am even happier!

For those that don't want to follow the link, it's a Canon IXUS 870IS

+ 1 on the Ixus as well, nice and compact and tough as nails, with great results.

I too have been using DSLRs for 12 years so i am hard to please regarding camera quality.

I also recently aquired one of those little Canon cameras and i love it quality is excellent and it's video quality is amazing too.

I bought a few cheap memory cards and spare batteries on Ebay. It doesn't eat battery power either and its rechargeable like a mobile phone battery.

Also recommend a small little Lowepro water rewsistant wallet cost me €12 in Talbot Street, Dublin.

Can't go wrong with the IXUS mine has taken thousands of photo's up on 10k i think and a lot of abuse as demonstrated by the amount marks on it but takes perfect photos and battery is pretty good too!!

I know several people who have cameras from the Canon Ixus range and they're all happy with them. The image quality is pretty good, they allow you a decent range of manual control when you want it, and they're certainly compact.

A mate has a four-year-old Ixus 40 with a dent in the front of it from when he dropped it - it still works.

Another Canon Ixus owner here that would recommend them. Great cameras, great results even from me. (Not a photographer)

I use a Pentax Optio S10. This is very small and light and so easy enough to take on most rides in a jersey pocket. It can take very nice photos but it doesn't always autofocus well when the bike is actually moving. I am not sure though to what extent other pocket cameras would manage this though. Some random samples below, all from bike rides. You can see in the photo of Tiny on the MTB how it doesn't necessarily get moving subjects great- some other small cameras may be better at this. At the ToI stage finish in Waterford Raam's camera, I think a Canon, got a much better shot of the finish, mine were a bit of a blur. For static stuff the Pentax is good though. It is quite point and shoot, not a lot of manual control.

I have a Pentax too. Mine is an optio s5i.
Haven't taken any photos while cycling but have had it in a jersey pocket I've also taken it with me doing a lot of hiking and skiing and find it very light and robust.

I was very impressed with how Blorg manages to take snaps while cycling - more down to the man himself than the camera though I reckon.

Thats a steal ! And 10 mpx is plenty for a compact, any more than that on any compact is a waste, as the lenses are not up to it, so dont be misled by the marketing hype.

Haha, no, direct single shot from my cheap Pentax Optio S10 compact. It really looked like that in reality, almost like the background was a painting.

EDIT: I actually ended up getting the Canon Ixus reccommended, think it is a bit better at things that are moving.

That Lumix got joint winner with the Canon Ixus 90 IS (EU model name) in the dpreview test linked above... I was considering it along with the Canon but the Canon was a fair bit cheaper when I was looking. That price on the Lumix looks very good all right.

When I was on the lookout for a smaller complement to my manual SLR I ended up with Fuji's Finepix. At first a E510 which needed replacement after a while; the screen didn't survive a cycle crash. I'm now quite satisfied with the A900 for over 1.5 years, it seems even somewhat more robust than the E510 and doesn't seem to have too many problems with either humidity/sweat or cold - to a certain degree.

It certainly is larger than the Ixus or Lumix, but still fits in a trouser pocket if it has to. I purposely went for that as it may be a bit steadier in bad light conditions (and/or high heart rate). Decent range of manual control and - biggest advantage - it lives off two common AA batteries...

    I went for this camera;

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-Digital-IXUS-80-Camera/dp/B0012ZEDV4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1241562346&sr=8-1

    Ixus 80

Really is a great camera. It's also got an aluminum casing which is great if you drop. Takes pictures really quick, no delay. Also starts up quick for those in the moment shots. I managed to get it for 150 with a case and 4gb card in Harvey normans, just had to do a bit of bargaining. Anything from the ixus range is good though.

    Thanks sexpot

Good post, I have been looking for a point & shoot with less than 10megapixels. 10mp is just too much in small point & shoot cameras. The CCD (the sensor) is just not up to the job in most small cameras with high mega pixel counts not to mention the lens.

Megapixel count is a not a god way to go about shoping for a camera imo. Watch out for cheap offers with 12mp, 14mp etc. Disasters, they take very noisy pics at those resolutions. Any anyway, you would never need that kind of resolution unless you wanted to print an A1 size version of the photo, if you are into that kinda thing, then you should have shot it with a high spec DSLR in the first place.

Another Canon owner here, Ixus 70 for me. Had one stolen in Peru and went straight out and bought the same model again - super size, excellent pic quality. Compliments my Canon 450D perfectly. (I'm a happy Canon fan!)
