Going to go to the uk this week or next to buy a new car, whats people's opinions on what to buy? I change my car every couple of months and iv had pretty much all the cars iv really wanted (bar ferraris and stuff) but in the current economic climate i want to buy something that isnt going to drop to much in value and that shouldnt be to hard to sell, i was thinking a 320d m sport? It has to be something half nice aswell?

    Thanks

Anything you buy will be hard to sell on in the current climate unless you sell it at a big loss. Sorry

as obove oilburner, very difficult to re-sell any car at the mo. But, if you must, BMW 320d with extras (sunroof, nice alloys, cruise and leather) is a good starting point.
Golf TDI's or Anvesis petrol's 1.6, always hold their value well AFIK.

Efficient engine is the key (low CO2) to help residuals on new cars.

Golf 2.0tdi 110bhp probably the best
Mercedes have a new low-CO2 2.2L diesel coming out soon on E250 and C250 that is supposed to be the beans

Not much point of buying a new car looking for value! Get one that you like and thats suits your needs and pay your money, otherwise you'd be better of with a used car.

I'd say a 320d M-sport would be as good a bet as any, but they lose horrific money in their first year. I looked at a '08 coupe recently, only 6 months old, 5000 miles on clock, it retailed new for 65k, this was going for 39k !!!

I'd imagine the same car would have lost another 10-12k by next year.

looking to sell before its even bought ..... :D

What about 09 demos (If any around) ? some would have taken some of a hit...

Madness to buy new and later sell a few months down the line (IMO)

39k euro brand new in from the UK inc VAT and VRT

What are you talking about? A base model 330d M Sport Coupe with no options at all is £35,525 new

Now deduct the UK vat @15% = 30,196

Now convert to euro = 34,000

    Now add Irish Vat @21.5% = 41,140

Then there's VRT on top of that, an on a base model it's €13,892 and then you have the delivery charge!

You're looking at about €56,500 min!

Aim lower, go for an '08 efficent diesel car that will have low tax.

How much do you want to spend btw?

    Go classic.

    +1

If you want something that'll hold its value and be easy to sell, go for something like a classic Merc SL pagoda or something like that.

    Uber cool too

    Try under €47000!

New 330d M Sport coupe from Broadspeed: £29300 (M Sport is a free upgrade from SE in the UK at the moment - why do we never get offers here?)

    - VAT = £25478.

Conv to euro incl. exchange fee = €28914

    plus VAT = €35130

    plus VRT (11734) = €46864.

Anyone wanna loan me €47000? I'm good for it - honest!

Last time I checked you couldn't get used 1.6 Avensis petrol in UK, all 1.8 or 2.0.

Golf TDi's very much in demand in UK, not cheap over there.

    BMW diesel is safer bet.

Where are you getting VRT of €11,734? I just did a quote and got €13,892 and how can this dealer offer a new M Sport for £29,300 when you go to bmw.co.uk and the base model costs £35,525

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,415 ✭✭✭Lord Trollington

in my opinion used low CO2 diesel engines are in demand.
    Something like:
    Toyota Corolla 1.4 Diesel.
    Nissan Qashqai 1.5 diesel.
    Peugeot 307 1.6hdi

1.9 Diesels older than 08 are slow enough also.

Petrol Engines of anything over 1.4 are dead in the water, and the arse has fallen completely out of the 4x4 Market.

There is no real saleable car at the moment, every car is a gamble!

330d now has a new lower CO2 engine in the 20% VRT band - presumably the VRT site doesn't have it listed yet. VRT = 20% of OMSP(which is 92% of list).

why can the broker go so low?
    1. free upgrade from SE to M Sport (didnt I already say that?).
    2. competition (rather than the cartels here).

Check the site for yourself, and it's not always 92%

An upgrade doesn't matter, they still have to pay for the M Sport model from a distributor and if a distributor is selling for a certain price then that's the price you pay.

I reckon the most sellable car at the moment is an 8-10 year old Toyota/Nissan with a small-ish engine, NCT and 3-4 months tax.

Apparently its not a Passat 1.8 TSI Highline...

Steve - I'm not sure what your problem with my figures is. It's really not that complicated - check them out for yourself.

    VRT
The VRT site is not up to date - as I already said. The 330d has now dropped a VRT band from the model given on ROS - it is in the 20% band. The OMSP has also consequently reduced. AFAIK 92% is the correct factor for the 330d - and if it's higher it'll only add a minimum amount at most to the VRT.

    Upgrade
That bmw.co.uk site you're fond of quoting? Click the 'offers' link on the right hand side. The free upgrade to M Sport is an official BMW offer - i.e. paid for by the distributor, not the dealer. (The site doesn't say it, but you can also choose free metallic and leather instead of the upgrade). Hence my comment earlier about offers - BMW UK continually run offers like these; BMW Ireland don't. Why? Another one: stick £1000 onto the cost of your 520d and you get leather, sat nav, bluetooth and a CD changer. (it's not just BMW - Mercedes will give you leather, metallic, sat nav, bluetooth, electric seats and an automatic gearbox for free on the E220 CDI - in the UK, anyway).

This is all way off topic BTW!
