What do you consider to be the greatest try ever scored in a green shirt??

What's your criteria? importance, elagence of execution, sheer release of tension/joy, individual brilliance or team effort?

There are many tries that have been scored that ultimately didn't matter, take for instance the try scored by O'Driscoll last year against Australia, lauded as the best team try in '08 but it won't live on in the memory like Geoghegan's against England back in 93 or Horgans try in 07 ...

It's too hard a question to answer in my humble opinion, everyone will have different reasons for picking a particular try.

Not that we can't get all nostalgic :)

Dunno if it is considered the "greatest Irish try" but one of my fondest childhood memories was watching on the telly Ireland in Twickenham 1982 when Ginger McLoughlin's drove into the righthand corner for Ireland's second try.

Can find a link for it though :(

Id have to say John Hayes try against Scotland in Murrayfield in 2005 what a finish!

Lots of reasons for picking this one.

Great game for us. On the satisfactometer, I can't remember really being happier after a game than this one - though when the try was scored, there was still a lot to go.

Brilliant team try - check out the work O'Kelly does. Also the emergence of D'Arcy and his line breaks were around this time (IIRC, was MOTM).

Admittedly, another reason is that I can remember it well and it was on youtube.

O Driscoll had one in France when he scored his hat-trick. Lose ball by Stringer, O Driscoll was on to it like lightening to pick up and score.

Awesome try, they were the reigning world champions and I think we were 6/1 or something before the game. The start of a four in a row over the auld enemy too.

For BODs hair alone it's memorable...

    Noel Mannion vs Wales.
    Classic rugby moment.

I agree Noel Mannions try was great was 11 and just started playing and his home house was just 200 metres away in Ballinasloe.

I remember that well - got a free ticket an hour before kick off and was pretty sure we were in for a spanking. You can see Cohen come in feet first on Dempsey as well there.

Not cos they're exactly classics but for what they meant. We'd been so bad for so long!

I was going to mention that try also, I dunno why but I thought it was Neil Francis :o that scored it

I'm with you on this one. Ginger taught me Commerce/Business Studies in school in Sexton's Street CBS in Limerick back in the 70s and even then he was a legend in Limerick. If you see a clip of him scoring you will spot a number of Shannon supporters who managed to get on to the pitch to congratulate him. A great "individual" try!!!

    And here's the clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lO6bAPOH3Zs

They don't show the front-on camera angle. It was priceless. Whenever anyone mentions great Irish tries, this is the first one that springs to mind.

Some of Bren Mullins' tries were amazing. The backline Ireland had during the early to mid eighties was lightning quick and very skillful.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27RRR1sh53Q - very poor quality, and a **** camera angle too :-)

Gordon Hamilton vs Australia in the 1991 World Cup QF. One of my earlier sporting memories alongside O'Leary's penalty.

Great thread OP, just spent the morning on you tube:D... Looking at what Ireland can do on a good day is a tonic for some of the posts you'd see knocking our greatest servants......

Neil Best scored a great team try against Australia in the summer tests on '07 before we went on to lose but I cant find it anywhere. Geoghans against England would be number one for me though.

Unfortunate the quality is so bad but that was an absolute cracker. Probably my favourite irish try ever. From the proper angle it's the will he make it won't he make it aspect that is so endearing.

Wasn't that the one where Best was missing a boot as well?

My favourite is Horgan vs england 2006. From his own 22 in the last minute and best of all it was against England to win the game, all the right factors of a classic irish try. What ever happened to him? How come he's not around playing like he used to anymore?

Still playing for Leinster, hes just suffering a lack of form at present.

fingers crossed hes not all washed up

Actually i just remembered i seen him last week walking out of centra on camden st. with a newspaper under his arm. He needs to shave that beard of his. I think he's trying to look like Chabel.

Have to go with the Mannion try.

Was on the terraces with a load of Welsh lads and they were nearly willing him on.

    Great moment in Irish sport.

its not in a green shirt but its the greatest irish player,so I count it,

Bod for the lions v Australia 2001,unbelievable.
Although I would like someone to show me where "latham was done ny Robinson",cause I dont see Robinson doing anything, except being in the background"
.All I see is Bod running amuck.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

Hadn't seen that in a while, cheers Goose. Beautiful single try.

Always torn as to which i prefer, player tries like that, or hard worked team tries.

Goose I'm beginning to think your admiration for BOD goes beyond rugby! :-)

But I do agree he's our best ever, just wish he was from down south Munster way.

Drove? More like he carried the pack up on his back for 20 yards and over the line in the most amazingly determined way. Legend!

    Mike Gibson

Hard to compare players from such vastly different generations but I think by all accounts Gibson was the greatest player ever to wear a green jersey for versatility, skill and all round ability but I only have my dads word for that:pac: and those stats, 5 lions tours!

Not to Mention, Kyle, McBride and a few more, but BOD the best I've seen.

That'd be Ginger McLaughlin. '82 Twickers. I think there was more than 17 English men on his back though, if the stories are true! :-)

(Mentioned on first page f this thread too)
