audi dealer in north wants vat payment

I enquired with a dealer in the north about buying a new audi for export to republic. They are very happy to do business but he said I have to pay vat to them, then when I pay vat & vrt here, they will refund the uk vat paid. As far as I was aware, I simply had to fill a uk revenue form relating to the uk vat and not then need to pay the vat because it was for export.
I dont like the idea of having to chase them for my money when the deal is done.

It's common practice, but does require a leap of faith!

Hi, i bought a car in the north last week, its standard practice so they dont get stung for the vat if you were not to pay the vat or vrt in the south, sure sign of a above board dealer, if they didnt return it a simple call to revenue wouldnt be long sorting it anyway ;)

you only pay vat in one European member state, as far as i know you wont have to pay it down here also!! Just the VRT

No you will have to pay the full 21.5% vat down here also then get the 15% back in the north when you have the receipt of the roi vat and vrt

Unless you are registered for VAT in Ireland, you must pay VAT at both ends and apply for your refund.

You cant reclaim vat on a car, and its the garage that will be holding your vat money so just have to get it off them

Is North different to UK then? In UK you do not pay VAT by filling in VAT form 411 on a new car, and just pay VAT here. Would have thought same rules applied to North??

You do NOT have to pay VAT when buying in NI for presonal export to ROI. Just fill out form VAT411 (google it). That's it. If you don't pay the VAT here, it's your problem, not the dealer's. Many dealers though seem to labour under the misapprehension that you do pay UK VAT - god knows why - it's easier for them to just sign your form!
