I was watching a film, Part 1, on Padre Pio last night. Very good film, not the kind you see on RTE, Channel 4 etc and the likes nowadays unfortunately. Well worth getting for anyone that is interested. :)

    padre_pio1.jpg

Here is a nice story from the Belfast Telegrapgh, fair play to them for printing it:
    http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/lifestyle/padre-pio-files-my-pregnant-wife-was-clinically-brain-dead-then-we-brought-in-padre-pios-glove-13489128.html :)

Here is the story of his life from www.ewtn.com

25 May 1887. Born in Pietrelcina, Benevento, Italy of Grazio "Orazio" Mario Forgione (1860-1946) and Maria Giuseppa de Nunzio Forgione (1859-1929).

Padre Pio's Family Home 26 May 1887. Baptized Francesco Forgione.
    27 September 1899. Confirmation.
22 January 1903. Took the Habit of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin (age 15), entering the novitiate and taking the name Pio. Until priestly ordination he would be called Fra. (Fratello/Br.) Pio.
22 January 1904. Made his First Profession of the Evangelical Counsels of Poverty, Chastity and Obedience.
1907. After three years of temporary profession he pronounced his final vows.
10 August 1910. Ordained to the priesthood in the chapel of the Archbishop of Benevento.
September 1910. Received the Stigmata visibly for a short time. He begged God to take them away. He confided it only to his spiritual director.
November 1911. Supernatural phenomenon came to the attention of his superiors when he was observed in ecstasy.
5-7 August 1918. Transverberation of the heart (the phenomenon of the wounding of the heart indicating the union of love with God).
    ourlady.jpg
20 September 1918. Received the Visible Stigmata, which would last for 50 years, while praying after Mass in the choir loft of the (old) Church of Our Lady of Grace, next to the Friary.
    Our Lady of Grace
1919. Rumors that the Church would transfer the local saint began to agitate the populace of San Giovanni.
2 June 1922. Orders of the Holy Office (today the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith) began to restrict the public's access to Padre Pio.
1924-1931. Various statements of the Holy See deny the supernaturality of Padre Pio's phenomena.
9 June 1931 (Feast of Corpus Christi). Padre Pio ordered by the Holy See to desist from all activities except the celebration of the Mass, which was to be in private.
Early 1933. Pope Pius XI orders the Holy Office to reverse its ban on the public celebration of Mass, saying "I have not been badly disposed toward Padre Pio, but I have been badly informed."
1934. Padre's Pio faculties are progressively restored. First the confessions of men are allowed (25 March 1934) and then of women. (12 May 1934).
23 September 1968. At 2:30 a.m. he died in his cell. As he had foretold he lived sickly but died healthy, with the stigmata healed.
26 September 1968. Buried in the crypt prepared for him in the Church of Our Lady of Grace

    God Bless :):):)

    Hi Corksham,

I got it from a friend on DVD. Like I say, its such a shame that RTE don't show good Catholic films anymore like this or the Passion film etc. All the goodness has been taken out of society, although I like Nationwide and some of the traditional programmes. I tell you that many young people would love to see these kind of films, even non Catholics dare I say.

    http://www.ignatius.com/videos/padrepio/

There is a Catholic channel on Sky on 569 I think, EWTN it is called.
    http://www.ewtn.com/

"This major feature film drama captures the Capuchin friar’s intense faith and devotion, and deep spiritual concern for others, as well as his great compassion for the sick and suffering. It dramatizes the frequent attacks of the Devil on him, as well as the persecution he suffered at the hands of people, including those in the Church."

He came under great attacks from other priests, the devil, bishops etc and also the press. He was accused of all sorts.

Ive heard that on his death bed he seen the Virgin Mary and his natural mother. He said: "I see two mothers". He frequently conversed with Jesus, the Virgin Mary and his guardian angel. :):):)

Your thread introduction gave a site with an interesting name, so I looked it up. Plenty more of the above type of accounts:
    http://www.dharma-talks.com/

A bit strange, even for Catholics, I thought. More for those who think 'Lost' is not an excellent fantasy tale, but real life - Dharma Initiative and all that. ;)

Padre Pio is still under attack. Surprise surprise. Tel me something I don't know. Like I say he was falsely accused by clergy and the press.

The Catholic Church has always been under attack, for the last 2000 years from every angle and source.

God bless everyone and may you discover the truth. :):):)

So what if its under attack, I know the church would say that this is a sign of contradiction, but some things are just incorrect.
Pietro Siffi, the president of the League, said: "We would like to remind Mr Luzzatto that according to Catholic doctrine, canonisation carries with it papal infallibility.

"We would like to suggest to Mr Luzzatto that he dedicates his energies to studying religion properly."

And if the pope infallibly declares that hienrich himmler is a saint does that make it right ? No it doesn't, its merely the church's opinion. I do not see how him testifying that he supplied acid is nit 'studying religon properly'

However there is no actual proof that he used the acid to burn himself though is there?

The constant attacks continue. If people are not criticing religeon, faith etc they are criticing the Holy Saints and the Holy Pope. Nothing changes. :D The amount of attacks on the Catholic Church should be proof enough to anyone about the principle doctrine and its solid foundation. Just as Jesus was attacked and blasphemed 2000 years so it continues today.

May everyone discover the truth of God. :):):)

Let me get this straight... The Catholic church should use the proof that everyone says it is wrong to prove it is right?

Man, George Bush was so right to enter Iraq, so.

There is surely nothing wrong in people questioning the veracity of Padre Peo as it is a crucible of truth in which he should survive easily?

That is bad reasoning. Just because something is attacked does not mean it is worth of attacking.

Unfortunately, the continuous barrage of criticism of the Vatican doesn't say much more than that it's disliked by a very broad spectrum of people.

The scientologists regularly say they're persecuted too, but do you believe that this suggests that what they're saying is true?

Alot of the written and spoken media only want to report or show the faults within the church. None want to show the good, and there is alot more good than bad. seems at times one bad apple gives the rest a bad name.

I love Padre Pio, he is a great saint is Padre, I should ask for his intercession more often.

Pamela just ignore the detractors, your posts are wonderful.

I'm looking forward to seeing the film although I hear there is a few of them, is this true?

    God bless and take care
    Stephen.

Perhaps this should be on the Protestants Vs Catholics thread.

    Protestants:
    Dont venerate saints
Dont pray to saints for intercession
Believe (although I would need to go digging for the bible reference) that all Christians are saints - no canonisation required! (open to correction..)

I was in his hometown, San Giovanni Rotondo, a few weeks ago, where he is laid out. Fantastic place and so beautiful, full of character, each night the entire town gathers in the main square, and cobbled street just to socialise, it's extremely safe and the people equally friendly, well worth a visit if he interests you.
