Hi, not sure if this is the right area but I've been asked to consider relocating to another area in my job which would mean working shift.

The above shift is in place and it looks really good, you work 12 hr shift for four days and then your off for four days (I think).

Anyone here do a similar shift, I'd like to hear how they balance life and family around these hours especially if they have young school going children. I think it might be a bit mad coming home at 6am and getting kids out to school etc.

I did 4x12, 3x12 set up with the odd extra day to make sure I reached the hours required etc. On the 12h days you will not do a whole lot honestly. You will wake up, get ready, go into work and when you come home you'll be more or less braindead, eat and go to bed. At least that was my experience.

I did it for a few years, and with no kids and studying, it suited me down to the ground.

However, it was fixed 3 x 12 one week, 4 x 12 the following week, so you were always working, say a Sunday/Monday/Tuesday, with Wednesday being the swing day (every six months, you then switched to the other end of the week, so it was the opposite. And of course every four weeks, you went from nights to days :D).

When it is fixed like that, it is very easy to organise your life around it, and it really worked for me.

However, if it is a floating type of arrangement, it can be a pain to try and organise anything.

It sounds like an Intel shift to me which is fine if you have an understanding spouse and live opposite the usual run of traffic which I did when doing it.
Also your breaks and lunch are paid breaks, none of this unpaid lunch breaks nonsense you get on regular workweek.
Not great if you are into sports or like your nightlife as the nights can be a pain but at least no meetings or corporate higher ups inventing "work" or making up new things to annoy you with at night which was a relief.
Basically you had a month of nights and just about were fed up of them when you switched to days and likewise with the days you were ready to go back on nights to get away from meetings and politics of the RWW staff.
Big pain was working Christmas day or other holidays when all the senior staff was off enjoying themselves and spending their loot.
Also evil to work if sleep patterns were disturbed by noisy dogs, burglar alarms, heavy construction noise.( one guy i worked with nearly went demented from loss of sleep when they started doing the LUAS outside his door for 9 months while he was on shift).

I went from a 9-5 to 12hr shift work. It will be a while before I consider a 9-5 again I can tell you. I'm working 16days a month and being paid well for the privilege.

I will admit I've no kids but even if I did I think it would be an advantage, I have to work two weekends a month but I dont care because I dont view weekends like normal worker drones do!!

    Hello

I am looking for 12 hour Shift Work in Cork

I know EMC and Apple do it but if some good person out there could tell me the names of other Companies who do this, that would be great

If someone knows the names of agencies who seem to have a lot of shift work jobs that would be a bonus

Any bit of information would assist - thanks guys!
