External hard drive dead?

    Hi,
I got a present of a maxtor 1tb external hard drive 3 weeks ago.
I use it mainly for storing movies and mp3's so I can stream them around the house. I setup all my downloads to download directly on to the drive as oppposed to copying them from my internal drive afterwards.
I leave the drive on all day, most days and it has been working fine up to a few days ago.
When I got home from work and checked the pc there was an error showing saying something like "Error while writing ........ to C drive (my external drive).
When I tried to access the drive I could see my folders but they were empty?
I turned the drive off for an hour or so and it came back and was fine.
Yesterday, it did the same thing while I was downloading something.
I did the same thing, stopped the download and knocked it off for a while.
When I turned it back on I could not even access the drive?
It gave me a "file is corrupted or damaged" error?
To make matters worse I don't have the receipt from pc world in Blanch.
Is there anything I can do to fix the problem?
This is my first external hard drive so I am a bit clueless.
Does it work the same way as an internal where by you can leave it on all the time and it can read and write at the same time etc.
Is there any special setting I need to apply?
Sorry if the questions seem a bit silly but I have over 150gb of data that I have just lost.

ps I have the drive connected using usb..

    Thanks
    Sham.
