Nissan Micra or Toyota Yaris?

Hi I'm just looking to buy my first car - will be starting lessons soon hopefully and i was thinking of either a nissan micra or a toyota yaris.

Can anyone tell me which they would go for - which is more reliable? I've seen a nice 2004 micra for 5,400 but i'm just wondering are they considered to be good cars?

Also when you are going around to the garages - like should you get a mechanic to check out the car before you buy it just to confrim that it is actually roadworthy - like presumably reputable car dealers are trustworthy but you'd never know.....!

    Thanks:)

I've driven both and they're both nice cars to drive. I prefer the Yaris myself. Definitely get a mechanic to check out any car before you buy - don't trust the garage.

Yaris looks better and both are very reliable.

Always get a mechanic to give it a thorough check, 100e or whatever it costs to bring a mechanic with you is small change compared to the price of the car.

If you don't know much about cars then beg, borrow or steal a friendly mechanic to come with you. The Yaris holds its value better then the Micra, so you might get a better spec Micra for the money. They're both reliable.

Thanks! Ya i do prefer the shape of the Yaris but they seem to be more expensive - from looking on carzone anyway - the most id be paying would be about 5,500. Do ye think i'm mad looking at a 2004 model for a first car or should i go for an older car since i'm just starting out?

Not if you can afford it!
It might be a good thing because you will be more careful with something expensive than if you had an old banger.

Go for the Yaris - €5k is a little expensive for a first car, but it shouldn't let you down and at least you will get something for it if you try to trade up in a couple of years.

Oh Crikey.. YARIS or MICRA?:eek::eek::eek:
Both SCREAM LEARNER and LONG AND SLOW JOURNEY BEHIND ITS DRIVER

If you must go for one of these horrible cars go for a Toyota..
But if your looking for a good looking car the Corsa new shape is really nice.

Get lessons, drive the limit and get confident before you drive the rest of us mad.

And before somebody suggests the pathetic line 'we've all had to learn to drive, so did you crap'
I learnt to drive in Holland, and they insist you drive the speed limit in order not to piss other road users off. I've driven in loads of countrys actually including Guatamala, with the exception of Sri Lanka I have yet to come across any crowd that are as bad as US Irish for shocking driving habits...

Also, the newer a car is the better because newer technology means that cars are safer and more fuel efficient the newer you get.

In my mind there would be very little to separate either the Micra from the Yaris. Both cars have a very good reputation for reliability (but either one might of course still have the odd problem!), so my advice is to take one of each for a spin if you can, and see which you prefer.

Little things like the layout of buttons and controls, as well as seat and steering wheel situation, once you've sat in for a while you'll get to know whether you prefer one over another.

    Good hunting!

Ya there aren't many yaris about though that are 5k though - most of the ones i looked up are like in the 6,500 to 7,000 bracket but of course i could look at an older model and not just the 2004 ones LOL!:D

Was showing my dad a nissan micra there that i saw on carzone but the dealer is an independent dealer and my dad advised against going to one of those. What do ye think?

Sorry about all the questions - just want to make sure i'm not conned!!:D

With all due respect the OP is looking for advice on what to buy here not the merits of learning to drive. And even though it is a mute point in this thread the Corsa is just as much a weapon of choice among learner drivers in Ireland as the Yaris or Micra. That pretty much goes for any car that is easy to manoeuvre and cheap to run. Also you will not get a new shape Corsa next to near the OP's budget.

Back on topic. OP both cars are generally reliable but the Yaris is the more popular of the two. However if looking at 04 cars the Micra is a fresher design (if a little more odd to look at) than a Yaris of that age. It is also a little more roomier on the inside than the Yaris.

Best thing to do is take your time and test drive both cars and see which one you like the most.

    Go for the Yaris.

Have '00 one myself and it's the best car I've ever had, never given a days trouble, very reliable car, great to drive and very good on fuel.

oh ra ra.. I happen to think its a 'mute point' to mention anything about WEAPONS the OP did'nt!
But whilst your on the point - I suppose to a learner (opposed to a EXPERIENCED driver) .. then yes maybe weapon is an appropriate word.

The post is open to whatever points and considerations that anyone wants to offer, and that happened to be mine.
As for the 'easy to Manoeuvre' that all goes down to DRIVING ability again does'nt it, and that goes with experience!

The Corsa whatever the year is a far better looking car than either the YARIS or MICRA.

    My advice to the OP
Get Lessons, get your licence and then get your car.
    Safer for you
    And every other road user..

    100 is too much.

i charge very little due to having no cert behind me but jesus...

even qualified guys charge at Best 75 quid depending on the veichale/scale required...

the yaris is fun but if its the older style model they understeer quite a bit but then again the mirca has nearly no poke in it... the micra wins as there cheap as chips to fix...

Hi Well you certainly have chosen two reliable cars I am a japan man me with cars. The Nissan will go on for many many miles, but are not very stylish cars. The yaris will also go on and on, worked for Toyota and can safely say they don't give any bother. Great car to drive!! You will expect to pay about 5,000euros for a yaris and if you go to a Toyota garage here and get one for that price you also get a years used car warranty on parts (some parts not covered) Well worth it but Yaris is winner. Above mentions a Corsa ok cars had one for a year but spent a fortune on my own repairs. Stay clear of the corsa. Same to say that cause a stylish car but reliability is important and it lacks that.

    Hope this helps.
