JOB SEEKERS ALOWANCE FOR SELF IMPLOYED

    My brother in law has no work and was self employed for few years as a carpenter, would he have to contact tax office and notify them that he has ceased trading due to not being able to obtain work also would he have to pay any tax due upto date of no work, would he then qualifiy for unemployement benifit and how long could he expect to wait before payment, thanks for replys.

    Not sure about the tax part of your question. You might find your answer on the Revenue.ie website.


    Re self employment contributions - he will not be eligible to apply for Unemployment Benefit, but will be eligible to apply for Unemployment Assistance which is means tested. His social welfare local office should be able to help him. My understanding is that he makes an application through his swlo and they send out an Inspector to assess how much he is entitled to.
