More likely to lose Rocky than CJ...

CJ's desperation to get back in a springbok jersey could be leinsters loss so i can see that happening.

Lose Sexton AND Contepomi?? Why would you love that?? So that if anything happend to Keatley we'd HAVE TO play Nacewa there???

Sexton & Contepomi are the only 2 out-halves in the squad!! (despite the fact we spent half the season with a winger playing 10).

As for CJ, he has had very good patches with us, but he just keeps on getting injured, so it's not fair to criticise him. O'Driscoll was injured for a year and a bit and only played about 5 games in the time, but because he didn't score 17 tries, win a Heineken Cup and turn water into wine while balancing a coconut on his head, people said he was a sh*te player and has lost it. Now look at him, banging away the tries for Leinster and best player in our 6 nations so far imo.

Whitaker good luck. Reddan would be a good signing, but there's a rumour that we've signed Stringer and to be honest I think he would suit Leinster a lot more. Quick ball, good organiser...we have the backs to do the rest.

Also would love to see Keatley sign. Contepomi is more or less gone this season and Keatley would be first hoice 10 ahead of sexton i reckon.

Ross would also be an excellent signing, but maybe lose McCormack instead of world cup winner CJ.

Also will be tough to hold on to Rocky.

Could be another bust summer for Leinster...let's hope we can get some top class players on long term deals and have a settled squad...

Get rid of CJ, Healy is already beginning to eclipse him and will be the mainstay of the Leinster scrum for a extremely long time.

    Different sides of the scrum....

CJ is at Leinster on a two year deal. Rocky seems quite likely to head back to Aus though. Would like to see Sexton stay as well, but would be happy enough with the other movements if they went ahead.

Oh, even better so. Though surely he'd want to be back in SA for the WC? I think the accusations that he's just here for the pay check are unfounded and unfair. He's been injured, there's bugger all he can do about that. Its unfortunate, nothing more.

CJ signed a 3 year contract. He has been injured ffs, it's out of his control and saying he should be sent home/contract terminated or whatever is ridiculous. In fact the blame should be placed on Cheika as much as anyone for playing him before he was ready. Twice he was picked without being fit and twice he made whatever injury he had worse.

+1. Give the guy a chance - he's got more proven credentials than any other Leinster player!

And good riddance to Sexton off to Perpignan? Are you mad? We have a chronic dearth of Irish outhalves, and you're advocating that sending one off to France wouldn't be a complete disaster???

Forgot to mention - South Africa don't impose the same restrictions on overseas players like NZ and Oz. Springboks are free to play anywhere - playing abroad doesn't affect their selection, so CJ could still present SA while playing for Leinster.

They've only recently relaxed it, and as far as I know its restricted to a limit of 3/4 overseas players no? Anyway, I also partly recalled that his contract ran out just before the next world cup, which would make a 3 year contract seem right.

I hope Sexton stays. Leinster played their most assured rugby with him at 10 last season. I don't think we would have done the double over Munster with any of the other options being put out. He's having a poor season - Kearney went through something similar and look at him now.

ahem.... i shouldnt have to be explaining this but Earls plays for munster, and the likes of Luke Fitz, Eoin O'Malley, Cian Healey, Paul O'Donohoe, Devin Toner, Sean O'Brien etc. have all come from that U20's grand slam squad so yes they are coming through, just not quick enough imo. Also looking at the current U20 side, who have 3 wins from 3 at the moment are showing alot of potential again so we arent doing too bad for youth.

Of the guys the OP has listed:

Ross: Why not good move for both parties
Keatley: He's a Leinster player anyway but would rather see him play evey week at Connacht , for aone more season anyway.
Reddan: Wasps in a bit of strife but cant see him breaking his contract, have also heard the rumour about Stringer.

Sexton: Needs a move to see if he's got the goods. Seems to be afraid to step out of his comfort zone. Perpie would be a good challenge.
Whittaker:Send us a postcard m8. It'll probably take forever to get here though.
CJ: Needs an injury free run to show his true potential. My only concern would be that given DeVilliers obsession with playing "quota" props for SA he'll need to be playing in SA to be a Bok regular.

It's a done deal. He will have to sign a deal by June/early-July to be eligible to play in the Tri-nations. And robbie deans has told all overseas players they have to play super-14 in 2010 to be considered for the world cup squad.

Everything i've read recently points to Rocky heading back, so i wouldnt say he's definitely heading there, but its definitely not in our favour.

A couple of people in the Waratahs camp said it's definite. It's just not definite where he will end up, sydney or brisbane.

Good point, many people have short memories and hence forget how well Sexton did given a decent run in the side. his season this year has been very stop start-cant gather much momentum, its nobodys fault-its Cheika's job to field the best possible 15 and with Contepomi in the squad it would be hard for even the most proven fly halves in the world to prove themselves as no 1 fly half.

Certainly Keatley has had a terrific season, but if he returned to Leinster I can't see him getting the 10 jersey - he's better off playing consistantly for Connacht. If Sexton went to Perpignan, as suggested, it would be a loss to Irish rugby, I'd like to see him stick it out at Leinster and fight it out with Contepomi for the no.10. Keatley has being more consistant this season but on the overall picture, what I've seen of both Sexton and Keatley I believe Sexton is more capable of being international level

That's bad news indeed. The squad will be weakened significantly by Dr Phil and Rocky both going. But at least that leaves an option to sign a high-profile foreigner or two...

Any sign of Whitaker retiring? We can live in hope... When does his contract expire?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,920 ✭✭✭✭stephen_n

Why is it assumed that Sexton moving to France would be bad for Irish rugby? a couple of seasons over there would probably help complete him as a player and he could still play for Ireland while he was there, not that he is even looking like making Kidney's squad at the moment!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

Thats from a non-Leinster point of view - from a Leinster point of view, losing Sexton means losing two fly halfs in one season, so its a bit of a shock.
