    Hi Folks,
    I recently purchased a 1996 143 500hp.
My mechanic accidentally crossed the jump start cables on the battery the other night.
The truck will not start since.
I have taken out the ECU and this looks to be fine.

    Anyone have any suggestions please?

    Thanks,
    Eddie

All you can do now is check relays and maxi fuses it has to be one or the other I reckon.

How can you tell the ECU is fine ??

A 96 scania should just have a normal injector pump which should run without an ecu.

When you say it wont start, do you mean it wont turn over, or it wont fire?

If you can give me some more info I can find out for ya possibly

This truck is actually using the ecu.
It has the modern engine as it is a 500hp..

Checked all fuses and relays..no joy :(

Yes, it will turn over, but wont fire

ecu looks to be fine..no smell of burn or anything

going to replace the altenator next

if this does not work, going to send ecu off to get checked properly

The alternator may be shagged, but that won't stop it starting.

Your best bet would be to borrow an ECU from another one and try that in it.

Crank shaft sensor would also be a likely problem to have been burnt out, this may cause starting issues

    Thanks will check the sensor..

An ECU for one of these is very hard to get as it is a 500hp 3 series..very rare.

Is there anyone in Ireland that can check the ECU or will it have to be sent to the uk?

    Thanks again,
    Eddie

There is a guy in Mullingar that does ECU work, not a clue who he is though.

but if its turning and not fireing, would it not make more sence if it was a relay or one of the main fuses?

Cant say that I didnt tell you so.

Has the truck an injector pump or is it common rail?

    truck is common rail..

been told now to check the crankshaft sensor..

why did you replace the alternator ??. Anyway, dig out the manual or a diagram of the fuses layout, and make sure they are all ok, just looking at them is not always good enough.. get a multimeter and check for power at both sides of them with ignition on. If you can get a service manual you could check for power at the ECU, then check for crank sensor signal, but tbh then you are getting into diagnostics at that stage, and main dealer territory. No point replacing stuff randomly. If you want to get the ECU looked at for obvious damage, pm me..

Hello, I have a 143 500 Scania, it was running fine, then went into a limp mode, so I switched it off for twenty mins, then started it, ran fine for another hour, did the same thing. Came back after weekend, went to start runs for 20-30 seconds then kills it self, it is not starved of fuel, and looks like a computer thing?? any answers on this anybody?

Yeah, bring it to Scania and let them sort it. That or get someone who will ar5e around, change stuff unnecessarily and suck their teeth a lot, then hand you a bill about the same size as Scania would. IMO. :)

    Fault codes?

What made you think that a dead alternator would stop it starting ?

Reversed connections would likely kill the ECU. Electronics don't like that one bit. There may be a fuse inside the thing.
