    Hi,

I recently reinstalled Windows on a latitude D400 but am having trouble enabling wifi again.

The problem is that I don't know which wifi card I need the driver for. The model was purchased from the dell outlet store so I'm unsure (and dell website can't tell me) exactly which on-board wifi card is on the machine.

I did the same on a similar model and had no problems as I got the right driver by luck - there's a few on the website.

Any idea where I can find the wifi card on the motherboard? it should have the model printed on it, right?

Ah yes I see your confusion.... Loads of modules listed for that model.

    Under 'Other Devices', I get

    >Base system device
    >Network Controller
    >PCI Modem

They've all got question marks beside them which I guess means that they haven't been installed yet.

The unknown 'network controller' is in PCI bus 1, device 3.

    OK.

First try this software, it will search for drivers for devices:
    http://www.download.com/DriverMax/3000-2098_4-10572602.html?part=dl-85782&subj=dl&tag=button

Failing that try this software, it will scan the hardware and might give you a hint as to what card is in the laptop:

As a last resort: Flip over the laptop and on the underneath their will be some doors, one will be the RAM and the other should be the Mini-PCI slot, this is most likely where the radio module is and you can get some ID from it, take a photo if that proves to be correct and post it up.

WooHoo. I'm typing this from said laptop.

Scan software worked fine. Card turned out to be Dell/Intel 2100. AFAIK they were much further along the product line (1350 was other system) when I purchased these. Guess the factory outlet place gave me a frankenstien of a computer. That said, I got it cheap six or so years ago and they're still doing very well.

Munstercycling, thank you very much for taking the time to help me. Very decent of you.
