Actually it may all be part of 'the plan' ...

All the talk in the industry has been about 'added value' namely additional stuff to give one a reason to want to buy an album apart from just the music.

In my local Music shop they had the regular album, the regular album with a CD sized book maybe 2/3rds the thickness of a CD box.

Then a bigger boxed set including access to downloadable Video content.

Then to top the lot a boxed set with DVD, Book and a pair of Bono's Jocks (possibly) for Euro 60 !

They're obviously proactively exploring different ways to selling the album - I wonder was the plan to stick it out first at 'full price' for the fans then drop price to attract the passers-by?

Just heard on the wireless that it is selling more than the other top five UK albums combined. Also that they'll be selling show tickets from €30 to €000's. It's all pretty damn interesting to be honest. Who could've guessed all this a few years ago?

Got it myself last night in hmv.

Its actually not all that bad... its kinda alright, but nothing to go crazy about. A few of the tracks fit in with each other, no line on ethe horixon, magnificent, get on your boots and breathe.

the rest of the album just seem a bit lost... especialy Fez, no idea what the hell they were trying to do with that... guessing Bono just wanted to be enveloped in the sound...

Definately not as good as the previous stuff they did with Brian Eno...

Never a good sign when you see an album being advertised on TV as "They're back with an amazing new album..." or whatever slogan they throw at you, the kind of thing you'd see from X Factor winners and the like. Sounds terrible from the add I must say, there was a guy of around 50 on the late late last week who queued outside hmv for 3/4 days to get it, did he think they were going to run out of copies??

Wasn't mad about it when I first got it, but after a couple of listens it's growing. Hated "Breathe" with a passion & couldn't get past about half way before turning it off, but then saw it performed live on letterman & it's a pretty amazing live track.

Listening to it right now actually.

    Obviously not! :)
Its like that Scottish guy who won X factor, next thing ye know theres adds on tv telling you to go out and buy he's great new album, great pile of ****e more like. Whats next an Eoin Quigg amazing album. You generally dont this kind of thing for good music, like say for example Radiohead...

heard that there new song on the radio the other day (not that boots song) and was mildly entertained for a while. Actually thought it sounded A LOT like Jane's addiction til that edge fella started doing a caricature of his trademark playing and bono started the best exaggerated impression of Bono ever.

Much as I don't like them, I think their capacity for writing extraordinarily good songs is lost amongst bono's 'brothers, sisters, sarajevo, a kid in africa just died..now another one, etc.'.

While I wouldn't dream of listening to anything after pop, I think that 'In a Little While' (can't remember the name of the album- the one with them in an airport on the sleeve) is one of the most charming songs ever made.

Oh and just on the tax thing - if you were a big campaigner for western led development of the third world would you pay taxes in Ireland, a country with one of the worst records for government aid for the third world?

I know I wouldn't. Holland has one of the best records in this regard, so by being 'tax exiles', U2 are actually making sure that a larger proportion the vast amounts of tax they pay actually goes to what they believe is important (which I'm led to believe is third world development etc.).

Now obviously they can't come out and say this because it seems arrogant (and it probably is) but it is perfectly logical and from a moral perspective seems fairly justified.

I was just having a gawk at the charts there, 'Magnificent' by U2 in at 42.

Do you know how few singles you have to sell to get to 42?

I guess this could be downloads alone - is it officially released as a single.

Irish charts about 300-400 , I think it's about 8,000 to get to number 1 in the uk.Those guys are minted Adam apparently owns the stephens green shopping centre.

According to the UK Official Charts company -

'As a rough average of the past decade, a Number One record has sold approximately 133,000 copies per week. Sales of 25,000 have been sufficient to reach the Top 10 - particularly during early January when sales are traditionally lower.'
