Thistles

First time here, even tho I'm am keen gardener. But a few weeks ago my father in law died, he was from Scotland (lived in Ireland most of his life) and we have some thistles that were in the wreaths. We would love to be able to root these in a pot, does any know if this is possible?

Related but not the same plant.
Onopordum acanthium is the scottist thistle whereas the one in the link is Echinops, the globe thistle.
Although it would not surprise me if this is what was used in the wreaths as they would be more commonly available to the wreath makers.
