The aul fellow picked up a 2004 s40 1.9d in an auction recently. Anyway its in perfect condition but its due for a small service (we'll do that ourselfs)

Anyway it has the 1870cc diesel lump (plenty of poke in it btw).

I was wondering is there anything that goes really wrong with this engine? And who makes it, renault?

Lastly anything to watch with the car in general?

    Thanks all

Yes the 1.9 TD is a Renault unit and was actually pretty reliable. Pretty peppy too for the time with 115bhp. A friend of my father has that engine in his Mitsubishi Carisma and it has been trouble free since he bought it over 2 years ago.

General things to watch out for in that S40 were electrics, make sure everything works but given it is the run out 2004 model most problems were probably ironed out at that stage. Also avoid Volvo dealers for servicing, they are well known for being expensive, find yourself a good indy mechanic.

Yep - its the Renault engine.

Is it the silver one from Chapmans?

Make sure the timing belt was done - I think that its due at 80k but I'm not 100% on this. If its the car I was looking at there's a sticker on the engine that mightt indicate a belt change.

GSF should be good for parts if you want to avoid main dealers.

Might be no harm to replace the fuel filter along with the usual service items just to be on the safe side.

Ye it was that one alrite, originally aiming for the pale yellow s80 petrol as we thought the s40 one was out of the price range but bidding was slow starting at 3k and we got it for 4, and was under the 6k budget. All in all very happy :). Miles are high but fsh dosnt look like its been abused and a ex-company car so no worries.

Tbelt was done at 100k, so plenty of life left in it. Little or no work to put her thru the nct aswell ( we hope lol)

Just shows theres bargains to be had if you look in the right places. Oh theres another liquadtion auction in a pugeot garage on the nass road on saturday afaik

I had a good look at the S40 and it looked like a good one - a bit oily around the MAF I think but just needs a bit of TLC. The engine sounded good in it too - should have lots of life in it.
