    Hi,

We are hoping to move back to Galway by the end of the summer. Our baby will be 2 by then. What is the average cost of childcare for Galway. Is it still 4years of age when they enter primary school? Thanks.

Dunno anything about childcare costs in Galway, but with regards to when a child should start school, it's not so clear cut as saying "they'll go when they're 4".

My daughter will be starting primary school in September 2010. She was born in February 2006, so she will be 4.5 years old. A child born in July or August of 2006 may not be ready as they will only have just turned 4, they should in a lot of cases be held back from starting until they have just turned 5.

A lot of it depends too on the child in question, if they seem ready. One child will be ready as anything whilst another is maybe too "young", in that they're maybe still quite babyish, or very shy, or perhaps their speech needs time to improve etc. Only you (and any pre-school/Montessori teachers who are involved with your child) will know if your child is ready for school.

Then, some people say that boys are better off starting a little older than girls, due to attention spans, different ways of learning. The best thing that you can do is to try and attend an open evening at the Primary School you intend to enrole your child in, talk to the teachers, ask their opinions etc etc etc.

There is actually a Primary & Pre-School forum here on boards where you might get some more information regarding schooling etc.

Second above poster comments on school readiness.

Start age can differ from school to school, so you will have to ask around e.g. aged 4 by 1st Sept of starting year, aged 4 by 1st June of starting year. Enroll good & earlier, some schools in Galway have sent out place acceptance letters since after christmas for children starting this coming Sept.

For childcare, we are paying €160 for baby son and €140 for DD per week at a work-run creche/montesorri which I believe is quite reasonably priced.
