New Govt cuts this month - will the dole payment be lowered??

I certainly hope not. For people who are used to having money from work who are suddenly forced to go on the dole and then having that money reduced as well, it's not really fair.

Personally I only just got enough money to pay my rent with the January increase. If they decrease it I don't know what I'll do. I'm broke as it is.

It's hard to say and unless you're working on the inside then you'll only get speculation here. But it's a worry for many people for sure

My own view is if minimum wage is cut (unlikely) or minimum wage workers starts paying income tax (pretty likely) then it's inevitable that the job seekers rate will be adjusted downwards.

I'm not saying it's right or wrong, just that's it wouldn't suprise me

Live Register at an all time high and rising
    4 Feb 2009

This week has seen record breaking figures for the Live Register and redundancies. The seasonally adjusted Live Register figure now stands at an all time high of 326,100. While the redundancy figure for January 2009 was 142.7% higher than the same month last year at 6,708. This is the highest monthly increase ever and should this rate of increase continue then redundancies will reach 60,000 in 2009.

The standardised unemployment rate now stands at 9.2% - a figure not seen since December 1997.

So lets see...326,100 people. Lets say they cut the dole (at most) by just under half - 100 euro then 100 euro multiplied by 326,100 people would give them 32.61 million.

Out of 2 extra billion they need...
"Figures from the Department of Finance showed an Exchequer deficit of just over €2bn for the first two months of the year as tax revenues continued to fall."
Surely they wont do this. very inefficient way of getting money and i imagine it would be extremely unpopular.

oh ya bit stupid arent I? THIS IS WEEKLY! DUH

This would save 1.7 billion a year....which is close

But I was taking 100 euro as an extreme example.

maybe a more realistic figure would be 25 euro less the current payment of 204.30....which would save about 425 million a year - almost a quarter of what they need.

I hope it doesnt happen :(

Dole wont be cut in half.....it may be cut slightly, it really depends on your personal circumstances whether you can afford that cut.

As an aside your figure of 36 million is weekly. Over the year its close to the 2 Billion.

i would agree with kippy .scoial welfare payments wont be cut in half ,not a chance of that ,.at most id say they mite reduce it back to last years rates.really show how little foresight they have ,they probably shouldn't have increase it in the budjet.

We're in reciept of a social welfare payment and expect that it might be cut but not by much. A few % maybe. For the ammount of money that sorry excuse for a government would save it wouldn't be worth all the confusion and public outcry and marches and so on.There are other places where they can make up the numbers. They DEFINETLY wont be cutting it by 50%, not a hope in hell. They did it to the poor under 20's and got away with it...but try it with the other hundreds of thousands and we'll be eating Cowen for breakfast....yeah, bbq the f** f*** :D
