Frost/Ice building up in fridge

    Hi,

Have an Electrolux fridge freezer (about 6 years old) and for the last few weeks there has been frost and ice building up at the back of the fridge on the top part.

I've checked the door seal and it seems OK, the drain also seems OK and the ice is not collecting around the drain.

The fridge has also started to get noisy most of the time.

Any suggestions on DIY repairs or what could be the cause ?

Its obviously out of warrenty so not sure it worth spending money on a service call. Any advice or suggestions appreciated.

    Thanks!

Would it be too obvious to ask if the temperature control was turned up accidentally ?

Oh, if only it were that simple :)

Temperature control is turned way down to 1 or even 0.5 for a while and it is still happening.

Try pulling out the fridge and see if there is anything blocking the air circulation at the bottom where the motor is.

See if there is any dust around there - give it a hoover.

Also the drain inside my fridge goes down into this back area and could get manky and needs to be cleared.

I once had to pay a service man €100- to do all of the above. :(
    Fridge working perfectly since.

Could be a faulty thermostat, since you say it's noisy most of the time.

Is it possible to replace the thermostat as a DIY job ?

Ah - mine is a free standing one, I'm waiting for it to burn out before I get an integrated model.

Maybe you should wait for other replies, or get the service man in.

I think it could be time for the service man alright although I'd hate to be spending up to €100 for someone to come and tell me its not worth replacing and I have to go buy a new one! At the moment its still working although does seem to be getting worse....will try pull it out over the weekend have have a look behind.

I've replaced a thermostat on a freezer before and it was pretty easy. I got mine from here ... http://stores.shop.ebay.ie/DIY-Applianceparts__W0QQ_armrsZ1

There are plenty of other suppliers, just type in 'fridge thermostat' into the ebay search bar.

BTW I discovered Ranco seems to be a very common make used in a lot of freezers and fridges, and even though the model numbers might not be exactly the same, it's pretty easy to find a newer replacement model number (just send the guy a message). The only slightly awkward thing I had to do was to cut off the spade connectors on the wires coming from the freezer and connect the supplied new ones as the connectors on the thermostat were a different size.
