Turbo Actuator

Ok, The turbo actuator on my beast is on the way out. Bascily it is not opening to allow air into the Turbo / engine. So far I have been told that I can only get the complete Turbo and not the electronic actuator. I am thinking of spraying a small amount of WD40 to try and free it up.

Anyway, has anyone ever had to change one of these? If so, where did you get it from?

    Car is a 2.0TDCi Mondeo 2006.

How was it diagnosed?? the actuator cannot stop air getting into the turbo

By looking under the bonnett. The actuator is sticking now and then. When it does the car will not start. It is a visuale inspection. Since the actuator (motor) open the air inlet, it kinda can stop air getting into the engine/turbo.

    is it a VNT turbo?

if it is, the actuator rod sticking will cause the variable vanes to not open and close limiting the flow through the turbo and driving up the pressure, resulting in overboosting

the actuator rods can be freed up a bit, but from what I've seen its not very sucessful, I suspect a new turbo is what you need :(

If this is the one with the electronic actuator, then it sounds like the same as the Jag x-type diesel (I believe some of the Mondeos have a non-electronic actuator ?). Had similar problem on an X-type recently - it would start / drive but not cross 40mph. Actuator only came with turbo, could not buy seperately. New turbo over 1000 euro. Got a secondhand turbo for 500 euro and took the actuator off it and fitted. Took 15 mins, fixed the problem.

Have a perfect turbo (without actuator !) available if anyone wants it !!!!

Cheers sean, Sounds similar to my issue, difference is tha car is bearly start and the engine "hops" back and forth. I am able to get a new turbo for less than €800, but for a part that would probably cost around €150 I will look around first. I have been onto Hella, who manufacture the part and hope to get something. I will look around the scrap yards and see if I can get my hands on one.

You need to find a scrappie that hasn't figured out that the actuator is not available on it's own, and makes the "mistake" of selling you the actuator only. I wasn't able to find one ! Bought from Traynor's in Armagh, but them boys were too smart for me !!!

Good luck with the search !

Could you not fit an after market actuator?

I would if I knew where sells them. Will try e-bay.

Try the likes of turbo technics or turbo dynamics in the UK, generally what happens with VNT turbos is the vanes in the turbo carbon up putting huge strain on the actuator and replacing the actuator is only a very short term solution. Aftermarket actuators are only available for wastegated turbos.

Hmm worrying. Anyway to check the vanes? without removing the Turbo. If I get a new turbo and replace the whole lot can this been done easily? i.e. is it a bolt on, with gaskets etc?
