Hey lads. I am going to NI (belfast) this sunday to meet a bunch of friends. And ill be staying with them for a weak. So mine car with irish reg plates will be parked outside the house.

Problem: Lads said, that one car was trashed in theyr neigherhood just becouse it was Irish car, and the owners were catholics...

I am kind of afraid now... Mine car is not brand new, but replacing windows and stuff would be expencive anyway...

Now is it really so bad there? I thought its all over now... And things is, i am lithuanian, so wount know much about this stuff...

p.s. would i get away if i would just get an english style reg plates, and hook them on mine car, while its parked there? Or i am just s*iting with no reason lads?

there are that many people going up to belfast for one reason or another these days that there are plenty of southern Reg cars knocking about up there on a regular basis.
Personally myself i have been up there loads on nights out etc and never any bother.
I wouldnt worry about it to be honest, but tis up to yourself....

Ask your friend for a safe place to park your car near his house. He will know best where NOT to park. Like in any town/city in the Republic, there are areas where best not to leave a car over night ...regardless of number plates

Other than that, this whole sectarian crap is largely over and I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I think the lads are winding you up to be honest. Once you are in a catholic area you will not have any issues.

I've parked in Banbridge; I've parked in Coleraine, Ballymena, Portrush; I've even parked on Sandy Row (OK, I was taking a photo of the car under the street sign and got back in quick).

Park somewhere well lit and leave nothing on view in the car and you'll be fine.

Well they are not messing, i know 99%. Becouse if yes, i will come there, take theyr balls, and remove them!

Car will be sitting at same spot all 6 days, by the house. The thing that really bothers me, that that did happened...

And they said aswell, that day time its all fine, but at night alot of b*stords coming out from theyr caves... :(

I lived in Belfast for 2.5 yrs and believe me there is more of a chance of your car getting trashed in Dublin.

Buy a cheap car cover and just cover the whole car. Might be illegal to change plates?

Park it in the airport. Gonna cost you a little but at least you'll have peace of mind.

Is getting the train an option and then you could rest easy. If the car is not going to be in use much all week.

If it is a rough area, taking off the plates might make the car look abandoned, unless you had false ones/number from NI/UK to replace them with. When parked up of course only. Doubt skangers would spot the LHD or RHD side of things, if that comes ino the equation. I shouldn't be suggesting this, now should I.

Otherwise, you could always buy Celtic & Rangers stickers and put on the windows, depending on the colours of the street kerbing. Then again may be they like to hold a local Derby in the area from time to time. So forget this option. :D

Depends on the area you are staying.. I left my car in South Belfast and it was fine.. West Belfast was fine too.. East Belfast, your car could be damaged. Sectarianism in Belfast is still evident, just not as strong.

In or around the City Hospital/Queens area is fine. You get all sorts up there.

Although I was a little taken aback one time I was staying with a mate off the Lisburn Road and when I went back out to the car in the light of day, I was right by a rather fetching piece of UVF "Community Art".

Bad idea, the PSNI are pretty good at spotting funny reg plates and if you are out in the street removing one set of reg and replacing it with another they might start to get alarmed thinking that the car could go BANG.

    i guess you right....

so plan B. Get the lads to park theyr car very close to mine, so nobody would see reg plates :D

    Old joke:

Guy get stopped at a paramilitary checkpoint in Tyrone.

They ask him: "Are you a Catholic or a Protestant?"

    He replies: "I'm an Atheist!"

"Well then, are you a Catholic Atheist or a Protestant Atheist?"

    :D

But seriously, while I've no doubt that your mates are telling the truth when they say it happened before, that doesn't mean that it's a regular occurance. Personally, I wouldn't worry about it - you have pretty much the same chance of it happening in Dublin or Cork (there are scumbags everywhere). Just don't have one of those stickers with the guy in the Celtic shirt pI55ing on the Rangers jersey.

I travel to the north quite a bit & have not had a problem. I wouldn't worry about your car - but like all cities, there are scumbags about. Park the car close to the house & don't worry about it.

I knew a guy who had Irish plates but in a UK style, because he travelled across the border so much - but you need to apply to the Gards for permission to do this + its less necessary these days.

Did you price flights on Aer Arann from Cork to Belfast city airport too. Frequently it works out cheaper than the train.

Married to a lass from Belfast and unfortunately over the years I have had to travel up to visit the in-laws. I have never ever ever encountered any hassle in places all across the region (from Derry to Newry, Belfast to Enniskillen). I recently parked on Sandy row when I went off to get shoes for the kids and then did a bit of shopping. Years ago (~20), the car may have been damaged but nowadays its not that bad an area.
Your mates are either ignorant or winding you up!

Martin is that you? Or maybe it's your daughter, you know the one that got her snatch out on the Late Late!

OP, you'd be ok with a DL plate but stay away altogether if it is a C plate; one side hates you for being Irish and the other because of Michael Collins. D plates are west brit plates so don't park in the Ardoyne with those.

    Not Your Ornery Onager

My brother-in-law is coming over the water next week, and I've told him his English-registered car will be fine parked in Sheriff St. for six days. Should I have told him to park in Hardwicke St instead?

Disclaimer: Just picked these two locations at 'random'; some of my best friends etc. etc.

OP, there are good areas to park, and not-so-good areas to park everywhere. I'm sure you know some in Lithuania! Follow the advice of the people you will be staying with.
