mouth splint and costs

Hi
It seems I need to get a mouth splinth to ease/reduce the fact that I grind & clench my teeth which affects wears out fillings etc.
Just seen specialist and he suggests he will make up a mouth splinth which should reduce the grinding up to 80%. This splinth is €850. I am on VHI plan B+ but they don't cover dental things like that.

Has anyone had to get the same type of thing and did you find any way round the cost, switching to avivas or some other dental insurance.

Hi mate,
Not sure if it's exactly the same thing, but I got one in Janaury for night time use from my dentist for exactly the same reason. For all the world it's a light gum shield for top row of teeth and it cost me 165 euro.
Big difference in price, so may be totally different product but worth checking out. I can give you name of my dentist ( South dublin ) if needed.

yea. this specialist gave the line that dentists are starting to catch on to fact that these things are needed and are providing them but as he is a specialist his would be much better sort of thing. yea. its for that night stuff and to re-train your brain to maybe reduce clenching and grinding etc.
not based near dub but i'll make a few calls around all the same.

ok mate, working well for me already, first few times you wake up the jaw is all out of kilter from what you're used to. it's literally a cast made from the shape of your teeth and a plastic mould made to fit.

if you have no joy let me know - trip to Dublin + hotel stay + few pints + splint <<<<<<< specialist fee.

My dentist in abbeytinity dental practice in tuam made me one for 90 euro a few weeks ago. it's just a plastic gumshield but it seems to be stopping the grinding so far!
