It really depends on the car. The parts are only about €10-€20 but labour is the biggie. On some cars, the fuel tank/differential has to be dropped to access the lines.

This assumes that you mean the copper lines that can corrode and fail your NCT for you...is this what you mean ?

I had this done on my BMW 3 series for the NCT recently. It cost me 150 euro in total.

Is it the rubber pipe from caliper to steel brake line?

@pique and 8vjohn: It's a 96 vw golf and it failed the nct because the brake line was corroded and leaking .I am just presuming that the whole brake line will need replacing because it's such an old car .Im sorry that i know nothing about cars.

On the nct report, the spot is marked very close to one of the tyres if that helps..

@turnsoutIwas: 150 i could live with ,that sounds reasonable enough.

OK, well if they're corroded, then it is the copper lines. As I said, the parts cost next to nothing. It's a few metres of thin copper piping, cut to measure and bent into the correct shape, and a few connectors worth a couple of quid.

The BMW 3-series is one of the cars that does need the fuel tank dropped to access the lines, resulting in a high labour cost.

Not sure about the Golfs but VAGDrivers.net should be able to shed more light on the subject. €150 should be the max to pay for what is a relatively simple job.

I guess it depends car to car, but I did a DIY job on an old car once. Clamped rubber brake hoses, removed leaking pipe, had a new one made up (took 5 minutes), refitted it, and bled the system.

    €10.
