If you can afford to go without needing a job then I suggest you go. If you need a job, IMO, I would still probably go. The cost of living is cheaper over there and it all depends on where you're going.

    Where are you going btw?

Thinking of going to NY this summer for maybe 2-3 months. I can afford to stay if i can possibly get shared accommodation or other cheap accommodation. I think the price of the J1, a lot of that you could use for accommodation rather than paying for a visa if u dont really want to work there.

    without any hesitation :)
just make sure u have a return flight. then if things get bad (though thats part of the experience !) then you can just jump on a plane home

Well West coast anywhere. Thinking L.A.

What are the beach towns there like for work and places to stay?

Have you done much research? Because most people tend not to like LA. Images of smog, mega sprawl and severe traffic congestion come to mind.

You're probably talking about places like Santa Barbara and Huntington Beach though. From what I hear they are lovely laid back towns and during Summer a lot of people head there to chill, hence more job oppurtunities possibly and better nightlife. Worse comes to worse, you could always go to LA to get jobs.

Like I said though, I've never done a J1 there so I don't really know what the situation is.

LA is a nightmare, not a good place for a J1. I owuld imagine tourism will go down so as will jobs, places that were guaranteed jobs in the past wont be there anymore, but I am sure there would be one or two companies delighted to get someone in for a couple of months and not have to think about long term hiring if you knwo what i mean. Try get onto someone like the san diego outreach centre and they may be able to point you in the right direction.
