Getting new carbon bottle cages for my bike, which is matt black with white type and some red detailing.
Have it down to this or this
    What do you think?
    Any experience of either?

The most important question is... which one is the best match for your bikes colour scheme?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,995 ✭✭✭✭blorg

Why are the results hidden, I want full public disclosure on what bottle cage Raam prefers.

I haven't voted yet. We need to see the bike frame before we can make an artistic decision.

I also came across this where everyone seems to have either the Tacx Tao or the Elite one I mentioned.

Here are another few pictures to drool over:

    Another picture

David Miller's bike - Cage here

Mark Cavendish's bike - Cage here

Ivan Basso's Bike - Cage here

    Iban Mayo's Bike

    Along with the ones already:

    Another nice picture

Well if it's good enough for all those pros, then it's good enough for us. I'll take 8 please.

This be her, now which cage do you think. I'm leaning towards the Tacx Tao on looks but from what I'm reading the Bontrager in terms of holding the bottle tight. Hate rattling bottles...

Tacx bottles will not rattle, they are quite a tight fit. If anything the problem becomes sticking the bottle all the way down.

If you are leaning towards the Tao to be honest I would stick a stock notification in here and get the Tao in aluminium, with a free bottle, for well under €10 and free delivery. You just have to decide then between silver and black. On the one hand, you would have to look pretty close to distinguish the black anodised one from the carbon. On the other hand silver might actually suit your bike more with the crank and brakes.

The aluminum and carbon Taos (I have both) function identically and look identical from any distance. You save 10g on the carbon.

EDIT: 8g. You save 8g on the carbon :)

Oh dear, now I'm on the spot. Well, if I must spend your money, I'd go for the black Tacx

Same here, but if it was for my bike I'd go for the Elite Macia! :p

I weighed a 750ml. plastic bottle full of water today, on a digital scales............................................780/790 grams.

Sorry, how much weight saved between cages again?:eek::eek:

Best thing really is just get your team car to hand you a bidon (more Euro) when you need it then toss it away

What, you don't have a domestique?

No surprises, 1L of water weighs 1Kg...

I agree that deciding between cages when it comes down to a few grammes is fairly pointless for the casual sportif cyclist. I still have some steel piece of junk on my road bike. It doesn't look great but it holds the bottle just fine.

Go by whichever one looks better or is more sturdy.

I bet yee could save a veritable TON of weight by using velcro straps to attach the bottles to the bike

Ehh, the obvious weight saving method would be to simply fill your mouth with water before you head off. Whenever you need a drink you just swallow a small bit. You also have a ready made excuse not to have to talk to anyone, and if someone does rub you up the wrong way, a handy water pistol.

Energy is also saved because you don't have to reach down and grab a bottle.

Don't worry about the breathing impairment, sore cheeks, etc. These are all small prices to pay in the battle against gravity.

You're a clever mofo Dirk. I have an even better idea though. Store the water in the frame. Suck on the end of the handlebars to get the water out.

Or use the pedal motion to build up pressure which shoots water out a hole in the top tub, right into your gob.

Surely it's time someone invented lighter water. The pros would be mad for it.

Ya sure they've already got heavy water. Can't be that hard to make it light.

Cycling a heavier bike doesn't reduce your fluid requirements, so I don't see how that's relevant. :pac:

On the body fat front, I've lost about 10% (8kg) of my body mass in the last year already. There is a limit to how much you can lose without looking like a stick insect.

I reckon €1.50/g saved is a not totally reasonable formula, since you could spend €600 to drop 400g from a wheelset, or €900 to drop 600g from a frameset. On that basis spending €40 to save 26g from a pair of bottle cages (e.g. Lifeline alloy->titanium) seems about right.

    End justification.
