To ignore both RCT or Extraction if in no pain?

Hi folks, this is my first post in this newly discovered branch of this excellent forum!

Basically my story is as follows. About 10 months ago I got sudden excruciating pain in the left side of my mouth. It was difficult to establish if it was upper or lower part of my mouth.Anyway,I went to dentist etc and he gave me Penicillin initially to get rid of the pain.He speculated that it could be an abcess.Anyway, the pain went away, but returned again 3 months later,so I again went to the dentist who gave me a repeat dose of Penicillin, but this time referred me to the Oral Surgeon. She diagnosed through normal xrays, then a CAT scan for clarity and her own examination that I did not have a cyst as originally suspected but had an infection probably an abcess.Since last July the infected area above my upper left gum area has given me no pain at all,the swelling has subsided, only hurts if you push your finger up against it and a small piece of skin(a drain I believe)can be felt with your tongue in the area. I also have a similar piece of skin in the same area on the corresponding area of the right side of my mouth but have had no pain there.

The solutions I have been told are as follows.

    1. Root Canal Treatment plus a crown. This will cost me between €1000-€1200.

    2. Extraction (in hospital they say). Will cost nothing on VHI.

I don't have this kind of money to spend on treatment of this nature.
Can anyone with some knowledge or experience of a similar scenario advise me if there is a health consequence of getting neither the RCT or the Extraction done.Ok , when/if the pain eventually returns I could get it out I suppose. I am in early fifties.

its never a good idea to have any source of infection in your body present. If you get ill that's when the body can no longer keep the infection at bay.
you may end up with a cyst and have to have a large part of your jaw maybe along with some teeth removed if you don't have it addressed

I agree with vishal. I had an abscess which became painful and swelled my gum up every now and again. Initially I was on penicillin which seemed to get rid of the infection. Then the infection would flare up every now and again. It would last a month or more but by the time I had decided to get to the dentist the swelling would have gone down and I would think there was no point going to the dentist. When I finally went, I said that I was getting this problem every now and again, and I am nearly 100% positive he said that there was an infection there all the time and that if you leave it, even if you don't have symptoms, it will dissolve/breakdown or reduce the jawbone itself. Check it out
