Giant FCR 1 - 2008 or 2009

    Lads

First posting and I hope you can help me. I'm not too technically minded when it comes to bike parts, suffice to say that I know shimano, carbon parts and Mavic tyres get the thumbs up.

I'm looking at the Giant FCR series and comparing the FCR 1 model for 2008 to the new 2009 model.

The 2008 has carbon seat post, yet the 2009 seems to have advanced composite. Is that an improvement or not?

At the Cycle Superstore in Tallaght, the 2008 model remains more expensive. Does that mean the spec for 2009 is lower?

    Thanks, AvidIrishReader

    this v this?

same thing. it's called carbon fibre composite.

they have changed the frame for 2009 though, and the new seatpost looks to be 31.6mm instead of 27.2mm. makes no odds at all though.

the drive train looks to be the same. anyine know how tiagra a 4550 compare? i doubt there's any real difference.

the newer model has a new format fork (with a conical steerer). pretty. mavic rims. nice.

    nice paint too.

i'd go for the 2009 - i can't see why the 2008 is more expensive at all.

you might even be able to point this out to css, and ask them to sell you the old model for cheaper than the new which is usually how this works with bike shops. they might have a hard job getting rid of the 2008 at the advertised price, so they may haggle.

    2009's slightly better/prettier imo though.

buy a HUGE lock (maybe 2). that's a bike thief's wet dream that is.

I was in the same boat as yourself wondering why the 08 model was more expensive than the 09. I quoted the Cycle Superstore price to my LBS today with a view to ordering the FCR1 today and he said he'd have to check with Cycle Superstore. He rang me back saying that Cycle Superstore were actually selling it for 800. So I checked back to the CSS website and - what do ya know? - that price of the 09 model is now 799.

Did anyone manage to get that bike at 640?

All I can say is sheeeeyit!!!

Possibly still for sale (not by me), might be of interest since this thread is still going.

Thanks for your help. Should I assume that the Advanced Composite Fork equals carbon composite too?

This store has a 2008 model going at less than 700€ - you could probably haggle a bit with them if it is of interest.

thanks. I'll give them a buzz tomorrow. I'd be willing to pay that sort of price.

I find 31.6mm to be noticably stiffer myself.

Tried Cycle superstore and they had none left in the 08 or 09 model. Does anyone know anywhere in Dublin selling the FCR 1? (a large frame)
Everywhere I've called has said it will be 4-8 weeks before they're in.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Think Bikes are sold out too. I've just ordered it online from McConvey's.I'm a bit worried after the lack of after sales service now but I had my heart set on the FCR 1 so I'll just have to live with that I suppose.
