How out of date is it?
if over 3 months the car may be impounded and a daily fee will be charged until the car is removed (with tax paid up-to-date)

car can be taken off you after 2 months. that was changed in the 2006 traffic act. fees are initial €125 for the first 24hrs and €35 for every day or part off. fine if dealt with on the spot is €60 however if summonsed to court it can be a couple of hundred. depends on the judge.
