Hi guys, decided i want to go view the Scottish Highlands so im taking a week off in May to head for the highlands. I view this trip as more of a chance for me to see the sights, do some walking and relax. Quiet reflective time in the most beautiful place in the world. Now the question is whether i bring my car or use public transport. Car is way handier but also means im going to be spending lots of time on my own, which is grand but how much quiet reflection can you do in your own car? Public transport would mean i would be stuck and not have freedom to head to wherever i want but it would also be a bit of an adventure, im interested in any opinions people might have

Fly cheap as you can to Glasgow, the bus into the city and then get the train to either Fort William or Oban and enjoy some wonderful scenery (http://www.scotrail.co.uk/sites/files/1Glasgow%20&%20the%20West%20Highlands.pdf).

    Beautiful part of the world.

Agree totally, climbed Ben Nevis last year and spent a few days in both Fort William and Glasgow. Took the train aswel so i know the scenery you refer to. I just wonder if it is that easy to get to see things that might be off the beaten track in Scotland such as the Isle of Skye and Culloden Moor. Thats why i was thinking of taking the car but obviously taking the car id miss out on a bit of the adventure of touring with a pack on the back and not much more, but its only a week ill be going for

With only 1 week - ditch the car. Glasgow by train - Lock Lomand is less than an hour away by bus - or head up to Oban by train (recommended). From there you can get the ferrys across to the Isles.

The Hostel in Glasgow is great. In Woodlands Terrace I think. Lots of rooms, and 10 mins from city centre.

Train/bus also lets you relax and sample the odd glass of whiskey or ale! The distilery in Oban - then over to Skye for some Laphroig.....

I was thinking of taking a trip on my own like this aswell. I am off for a week from work in 2 weeks. What would be the best way to go about organising it, or would you think its a little too late?

But what happens when im on the islands, i presume there is next to no transport. Im tempted to ditch the car alright to be truly honest. Its not the way to travel at all unless your doing a road trip with friends. And yes drinking shall be playing a large part in this week of discovery so a car could hinder that. The only thing id like to see as well as loch lomond, skye and fort william is culloden moor but ive no idea if there is any transport over to that

Here is a link to a website that lists all transport in Scotland, both local and national, you might find it usfull, you may not.
Also, Air Arran fly from Inverness to Dublin so if you go that far north you dont need to make your way back.
When I was in Glasgow last year I was going to take a bus tour of the Highlands, the company that comes highly recommended is called Rabbies, you might find something there.
    Hope this helps :)
