A friend is thinking of getting a SAAB 9-5 with the 2.0lpt engine . I've been reading up on them and there seems to be the above issue with them .

Can anyone advise whats the best way to avoid a car with engine sludge ?

IS there a check that can be done .

Say if the engine has sludge in it is there a cure id its caught in time ?

    Thanks

If the car has been serviced using fully synthetic oil then there should be no problem with sludge. If it has been serviced by SAAB, they should have this on record and if the update was done to the system.

No documented service history with the car so cant tell how/ when it was serviced .

I was hoping there may be tell tale signs that there may be a problem ?

Unless it's absolutely dirt cheap i'd walk away, so.

There may be a kind of whining noise from the engine. If it sounds like it should, you may get away with dropping the sump and cleaning the strainer. Flush thoroughly with a flushing oil and service it using fully synthetic oil. If it is less than 8 years old it may still be covered by SAAB's engine warranty, which was introduced because of this problem.
If you do buy it, no matter what anyone tells you, drop the sump and clean the strainer. At least then if it is clean when you open it, you will be more comfortable that you have a good one.
Even if it has been run with semi-synthetic oil, it should be OK because the 2.0l does not generate the same heat as a 2.3 fpt or Aero.
Later ones had a modification done to help with this problem.

Sounds like good advise ... is there a guide anywhere for doing it or is it better going to a SAAB specialist.

The whining noise is this just at startup ? where exactly would the noise be comming from.

It seems that after 2003 there shouldn't be so much of a worry
