    Hi all,

Just found an idea about growing your name for science. Basically you fill a container with soil and children trace out their names in it. They put grass seed into their name and after a while when the grass grows their name will stand out.

Sounds good, Im just wondering how long the grass seed would take to grow like that??

    Thanks!!:)

The children can write their name using a large stencil onto kitchen roll.....writing is very neat!!!

Place this kitchen roll on several other layers of kitchen roll (7 0r 8), on top of each other, and place in a waterproof tray or on tinfoil with edges turned up to stop water pouring out sides.

Plant watercress seeds on the letters of each name - place seeds as close to each other as possible and make sure the seeds are touching each other all around the edge of each letter.....this will really define the outline of each letter when grown.

Wet kitchen roll gently...a water sprayer is ideal and after 3-4 weeks kids will be amazed with results.

Be sure to keep tissue moist by spraying each day and especially on Friday afternoon to keep them going over the weekend.

Best of luck & definitely worth a try.

Can also be done with a map of Ireland or local map of area. Colour the lakes / rivers / seas blue...use mustard seed for mountain ranges & watercress for rest of map......best physical map of ireland you will get as kids will be really interested!

Can also be used when building model of ...forts, crannóg, castle, etc.

Grass will grow in 3-4 weeks if not allowed to dry out.

Get empty egg shell & paint facial features on it. Use egg box inserts to help it stand up. Fill with wet tissue & cover in grass seed.

When grass grows kids can give it a haircut as grass will grow again & again.

If more ambitious get a pair of ladies tights and cut about a foot from the end, keeping toe end. Fill about 2 inches with compost mixed with grass seed (toe end) and fill the rest with sand, gravel, rags etc. tying knot at end to stop filling falling out.

Plastic eyes can be stuck to front and nose, ears etc. designed, cut out, painted & stuck on during art lessons.........some of these turn out fantastic if person is any way artistic!!
