Hand Brake Issue

    Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone could diagnose a problem with my car. I went to move my car the other day but the hand brake seems to be stuck. The actual lever is not up but when I put it into gear and let the clutch out, the car reacts the same way as it would with a full hand brake on. I revved it and kind of dunted the car back into motion. But when I tried driving yesterday, the brake seems to be back on.

Have any of you experienced this? I will bring it to a garage soon but I'd like to have an idea of what is going on / fixable myself. I drive a Peugeot 206.

    Thanks

How long had you left it parked up with the handbrake on?

The first time this happened? I'd say a week, tops. The car only gets driven once or twice a week.

    Did you get it solved?

Hi, I don't know if you have the same issue as I do, when you said you release the clutch the car feels to be breaking down at the rear wheels?

Because I have the same issue as you, but my car doesn't feel like being hold down by the brakes; it just 'beeps' as if I was pushing the break up while in motion, but I don't feel any difference while driving, it's just annoying.

I think it may be some type of sensor or circuit in the lever.
It is also a 206 (SW in this case).

I'm thinking of figuring out how to pop the cover around the lever and see if I can find some messed up wires or dirt, whatever.
Just let me know if you manage to get it working, could use a tip or 2
    ;)

Hey guys I have come across this situation many times. Once a car has been left for a while with the handbrake on the rear brake shoes seem to seize on still so when you go to release your handbrake the rear brake shoes will still be locked on. The only way to solve this is to first of all make sure you have rear brake shoes this can be by seeing weather you have a circular center plate in the middle of your rear wheel once you take the wheels off. If you do then great. Get a hammer and hit the the center of this center piece all around the circular plate this will free up the shoes. Do it to both sides! If your handbrake was gone when you apply the handbrake your car would continue to move. Normally needs adjusting or if it cant be adjusted its new cables and rear shoes. Any other help let me know.

    Hope this helps.

i had a similar one recently. it was the handbrake cable, it had become corroded on one side and wouldnt release properly as it was sticking inside its housing. a new cable has done the trick but by driving while it was stuck i wore away the rear pad on the side where it was stuck so needed two new pads too.

try get it done asap before it damages the pads (and discs too possibly)

    Heya, not sure if anyone is still checking on this thread;
Thing is, I got my problem solved, actually my dad got it. He was reading the manual and found out that the 'beep' can also warn you that your brake lubricant is at the minimum level. The beep I had most of the times (almost every single one) was when I was going up a ramp to school which makes sense since the lubricant brake deposit has a sensor which triggers when the liquid reaches a certain mark.

Try and see if it has anything to do with it, remember this is one possible solution, although I hope you have it fixed already ;)

Is there a way of checking if I need braking fluid? A meter?

I don't specifically know the Peugeot, but in most cars if you open the bonnet there's a variety of things with liquid in them and Min Max marks on the side (as well as the dipstick, which isn't as easily visible). Take a look and see if anything looks low.

I second using a hammer though - when mine sticks (it's done it about 5 times in 12 years) and there's nothing else wrong, I learned after the first panic and calling out the AA that a good kick bang on centre of the wheel on both sides normally sorts it out :)

I advise a flat footed side kick - you'll hurt your toes otherwise (I learned that one the second time).

Got it fixed. 340 quid. New brake canistors and shoes.
