Ok, this morning I log into my online bank account to discover my wage check that I deposited on Thursday last was entered again on Friday. So I have been paid double!! i am over $2000 up!! :D

This is bank error, or the guy that was entering it made a huge mistake. Now my issue with this is, its wrong of me now to not contact my bank and highlight they made a mistake. And I am also worried that my check will come out twice from my employers accounts, this is what i worried of, I don't mind taking money from a blood sucking bank but if its from my employer than i need to say something don't I?

What do you think, I know what i should do but the temptation is there to say screw it and take my chances and claim i knew nothing!!!!

Would you keep money the bank gave you in error 39 votes

    Hell ya!

Hmmm dollars? Houston Texas? Methinks you should go have a look at boards.us.

On topic....you should definitely withdraw all of the money RIGHT NOW and spend it on hookers and drugs.

    You're welcome.

I think you should deposit the money in my account, we can just let it rest there while you sort things out.

So is it ok to steal €2000?

No well i don't consider it right. Its tempting but someone will notice this mistake and you WILL have to return the money.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 149 ✭✭sammyv

Wait until next month, and see if anyone notices, if your work say anything, just act like you didnt know, and say you didnt check your account.
Wait for the month, and if you have to give the money back, at least you will still have it.

    Lucky thing

Say nothing for now. I'm pretty sure the mistake will be noticed soon enough and if the bank get in touch with you just play dumb. If you don't hear anything after a couple of weeks THEN hookers and drugs.

If the bank took twice the amount of money out of your account than what they were supposed to would they be in a rush to contact you about it?
    Do nothing til they ask.

This happened to me once years ago. I stopped working for a company and then they paid me the month afterwards, I only noticed when looking back over my statement and saw the money had been put in at the end of the month and then the deposit was cancelled and my account debited the day after when they discovered their mistake.

So they'll probably come looking for it back OP.

this admin error will eventually be found and you will be made pay the money back and i dont know but i imagine your boss will be billed for it. i also couldnt enjoy that money...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,252 ✭✭✭✭stovelid

They will probably find out eventually. And claiming that you didn't realize that there was an extra 2k in your account isn't going to help you. You'll probably just be overdrawn until more money goes into your account to pay them back.

Your problem here is that you're not a property developer or bank executive, so it's all your fault and the law actually will be applied to you.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,252 ✭✭✭✭stovelid

A non-moralistic poll option would also be nice. I suggest:

I wouldn't take the money. Not because I give a cunt about the bank, but because I don't want them to unexpectedly take the 2k back out of my account when I'm not expecting it.

No government handouts for me is what your saying here, ahh. I am in the wrong line of work!

This is so tempting not to say a word!! And I have to consider the hooker and drugs.

Someone, employer or bank, will find out. 2000 is more than enough to warrant some digging, and it will have left a deficit somewhere to be noticed.

Dont bother, it happened me before. They dont like the 'wait and see' approach either, tell them now.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,821 ✭✭✭RxQueen

meh me personally wouldnt keep it, i just couldnt, wouldnt be able to enjoy the money at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,069 ✭✭✭carlybabe1

This happened to me with an insurance check for almost 4000e  but I was too much of a scaredy cat to spend it, and by the end of the week they retrieved it back with an explanatory note :(:(:(

Eugh. I bet you're the kind of person who orders a salad in McDonalds.

I'd probably keep it for a few months. If you spend it and they come looking for it, then you'll have to pay it back and you'll be out of pocket !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 335 ✭✭sassa

The head says tell them cos the b astards will only take it back eventually but the heart says run with it.
I mean come on now hookers, drugs & blackjack????
do you really need to ask :D

EDIT: actually you should give it to the seven people that voted take it back
they need the hookers and drugs more

Remeber as well that the money could have been debited from your current employer rather than from the bank's coffers. In this climate, you don't want to get sacked for stealing money off your bosses.

Fess up, I'd say. At the very least it'll keep you in good stead with the employers ;)

Your right, and this is the main issue that i would tell the bank there is an error. I would love to get one over on the bank, but not my employer. So I will regretfully have to come clean. Maybe good Karma will come to me in other ways.

Or maybe this is karma giving me the money in the first place and i am just going to give it back!! :(

Take the money out of the bank, give Bertie Ahearn a call ask him which horse to back, give the bank back it's money, give Bertie his cut, pocket the rest, happy days!

That was my very first thought, so i was shltting it. But it wasnt a direct automated deposit. Just a check deposit, a duplicate of the actual one i made the day before!!

I am on hold right now to tell them about the mistake. Guess the hookers and drugs will have to wait for another time!

keep it man its their fault completely and since it is i dont think their allowed to just take money back. just kinda if a cash machine gives you out too much you dont have to pay. definitely keep it.

I wanna get in on the hookers and drugs team, i know a 1 legged hooker thats half price so come on!!!!!!!!!!!
