When you are thinking about something; anything, do you 'speak' to yourself in your head.... Is there any sort of internal dialogue?

    What a wonderful world.

I do it. I usually don't notice myself doing it but then once I do I can't stop.

Yeah, i was thinking about this last week actually.

Sometimes it feels like i have a very strong "counter personality" in my head. I think i developed it as a way to help me deal with the fact that i will go from one extreme to the other quite rapidly. When i am feel reckless, the inner voice preaches caution, when i am down or angry it will be happy or calm etc.

It's an odd one but it seems to work pretty well.

They are along the lines of:

    Im tired...sleep
    Hrm might watch x later
fcuk fcuk fcuk fcuk whatamIgunnadoImnotgunnahaveajob Fcuk fcuk fcuk.
Id like to go on holidays
    Running away fantasy
Why are people looking at me funny
    God I hate that person

Yes. Very much yes. I however thoroughly enjoy giving voice to this, well, voice. Unfortunately in our society thinking out loud is referred to as "talking to oneself" and is incredibly frowned upon.

I enjoy bringing my dog with me so that when people hear me thinking aloud (or "talking to myself") I can let them assume that I'm talking to the dog. Which is slightly less crazy.

No, they still think your crazy..trust me.

I just go with the flo, back comb my hair, stick some feathers, fluff and various other objects in my hair, swear loudly occasionally and twitch.

I would imagine everyone 'speaks' to themselves.

Who is your best/worst critic - yourself

Everyone does that. Most language philosophers don't think thought can exist without an internal dialogue going on. I mean, otherwise how do you think anything? you can't send a though from your subconscious or reflective side to your 'main' side without using some kinda language? If you have more than two voices going on, that could be a problem though, particulary if one is telling you that children are just smaller adults.

yeah i do it.... usually this kinda stuff though

go to the gym/ dont go to the gym
i need to get a job/ why do i not have a job
    what to eat
    plans for the day
    plans for the week
    plans for the year
    What MA to apply for
waiting to hear back from universities

boring usual stuff... then i would hear a song and think of the person i would associate with that song...mmm i do that alot!

I dont have any internal dialogue, but the dancing lizard on my shoulder usually tells me exactly what I'm thinking. I call him Lizard Face. He is my leader.

I do it - but just cos it's the only way I can get intelligent conversation

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 654 ✭✭✭sillyputty

I always do it esp. if i'm giving someone bad news i try to imagine how they will react. I have full conversations in my head - talking myself into something for example, but i think its normal.

The running commentary of the mind. It is very personal to us all. It saps up so much energy, from our day to day lives. Counter productive. Yet we wouldn't wish our worst enemy live in our own individual heads, even for a few moments. When you realise you are doing it, that is self-awareness. The rest of the time, it is a case of been away with the birds. A lot of thinking is really useless thinking or day dreaming, even if we think we are reasoning or planning. The more you practise it or attention you give it, the more habitual it becomes. The best thing to do is to try and project your attention outwards (get out of your head), connect with your senses (as physical) or indeed through meditation. Still the mind and silence that pup in the head.

Aaaaall the time. Its always really random stuff, and this is where it gets worse. I start laughing at my random thoughts, then I start laughing at myself for laughing at how fúcking weird I am for doing this. Then I realise someone has just witnessed my lol-fest. But if its a family member or friend, they dont think anything of it at this stage..

Or so you think. Obviously they aren't going to tell you that they plan on sending you to an asylum for the rest of your life. These things are best done using the art of ambush.

Next time you're talking to yourself, tell yourself to watch your back.

But, say if you were to experience a very intence emotion, good or bad, you don't speak to yourself then do you? "Oh yeah, this is bleedin deadly!" or "On no, this is complete poo" - I'd imagine most people just embrace that emotion and enjoy or dislike the experience....

Thanks for heads up. Im already an out-patient. If they knew the half of it, they'd reconsider letting me out.

    Much luv PH.

Not in the same way we do. e.g a sheep doesn't worry what the weather will be like tomorrow. they have no sense of past and future like we do.

Internal dialogues in humans is normal, doesn't make it healthy though ;)

How on earth do you know if a sheep doesn't worry about the weather? For all we know there could be a sheep lying down in your nearest field right now thinking " Please Lord let the rain continue and make it too wet for Togster the sheep botherer to come out and "play""

To say you understand a sheeps thought process is like saying you understand women. Nonsense.

OP, read up about NLP... the basics of which go through how the mind processes thoughts/memories. It's quite interesting and might answer your question about the internal dialogue.
