    Hi,
    Im looking at a 2002 renault clio 3dr 1.2 sport w 50k miles.

The car is a new shape for the year and looks mint.I am fairly mechanical minded and am just gona check the head gasket etc and give it a genreal look at.

What are your opinions on them?

Are they as unreliable as everyone says and is there anything specific I should be checking for?

I also read something about a timing belt and water pump change at 60k,is this needed with the clios at 60k or just some renaults?
The way the market has gone, how much would you be looking for a timing belt change at a regular garage,i.e not renault.

    Thanks

Clios have the best rep for reliability of all the Renaults.

Noone ever said Clios were unreliable, thats a Renault comment in general which luckily the Clio has been the exception to (I'm biased but I have driven three and none had any exceptional problems and never received anymore attention than servicing)

Timing belt is strongly recommended and I don't think this is an engine to skip it on unless you want trouble, I had the belt changed by an indy garage for 560 a week ago, that seemed to be the going rate from my calls around. I didn't waste my time with Renault dealerships, never got anything like satisfaction from them in the past.

I'm sure Honest Johns or parkers.co.uk would have a list of potential problems to investigate but other than that go for it, nice little car!

    Thanks for the advice lads.

What miles were on your car when you changed the belt?
Was that 560 for the water pump aswell and service?

It was at 70k on a 1.5 diesel (different recommended interval to your petrol), and yeah it was the full works, belt, pump, tensioner and rollers and little bits I have no notion about. I was a bit surprised at the cost myself but trust this mechanic and want to keep him in business. Contacted the northern garage my car gave from and they quoted £340 to do the job, but I'm too far south for the saving to be worth the time and cost to go up there. Maybe you're closer, if so I can forward on the mail.
