Nct Emmisions Failure

Just had the car pass the nct (irish MOT) today on a retest. Its an 98 Ford mondeo with 127k on the clock. Original Catalytic Converter.

Was sure it would fail first time because there was a 10" long rust hole at the bottom of the RH rear door. I just isoponed it and didn't paint it. The Nct crowd shook their heads but it was not a fail item which surprised me.

On the first test I failed for rear anti-roll bar links, worn rubber. Not a problem, got them off ebay for €15 and changed them myself.

    Then also the emmissions, failed:
    at 2850 rpm:
Lambda .85 pass is between .98 and 1.02
CO 5.24%!!! pass is less than .30%
HC 210 ppm above 200 Ppm is a fail.

So when I checked this out on the net a lot of sites suggested faulty o2 sensor or Cat was gone. I rang around was quoted €85 for a universal sensor from a motor factors and €165 + vat from Ford Dealers. I got one off ebay for €30, it was the correct one for the car (i.e proper connector) not a universal sensor. Like changing a spark plug, really easy.

So at this point I was debating whether to get the emmissions checked by a garage. I rang around and was given the old "5.24% sounds very high, what sensor did you use? How much did you pay for it? €30,That won't work!"

Basically they just wanted to sell me a sensor and the guy laughed when I told him it was €30. I would say they make all their money changing these sensors. I read on the net that 70% of all emmissions failures are caused by faulty o2 sensors.

Some of them wanted €50 to do a emmisions test so i decided I would let the NCT do it for €28.

So today 2 weeks later the emmissions were :

    at 2850 rpm:
Lambda .994 pass is between .98 and 1.02
Co .15% pass is less than .30%
HC 28 ppm above 200 Ppm is a fail.

    I passed!

I did use a shot of redex a week and a half ago and changed the air filter, and warmed up up well beforehand both times. Same Cat also that came with the car.

So it was a bit of a fluke but I saved a few quid doing a DIY job.

Oh if anyone wants to buy a recently NCT'd 98 Ford Mondeo 127K, let me know...:D

Each to their own but I wouldn't fit a 30 Euro lambda sensor. Maybe the problem with the car was not the sensor at all but that it wasn't warm enough when it was tested.

Guy at work also failed on old Corsa. The only suggestions I had were to get oil & filter changed & ensure car is fully warmed up before the test.
