With the proliferation of these masts everywhere just wondered how much the landowner can expect for the use of his land.

I know the ESB pay so much per pole but what about vodafone, o2, etc.

if you consider the (alleged) links to cancer from these masts - its not enough...... personally I wouldnt do it but if someone is faced with"free money" I can see how they would be tempted.

Dont go into this blindly - do as much research as possible and dont believe everything you read/are told ..... the mast peopl will prob tell you that its completely safe blah blah blah ....... the anti-mast people will tell you animals will suffer, people will suffer blah blah blah....both have interesting arguements.

everything will eventually kill you , watching too much tv , using a microwave etc , masts have to be erected somewhere unless we all go without mobile phones

I'm involved in a community organisation. We have a large lamp post in the carpark of our premises. It is on top of a substantial hill. One of the mobile phone providers rents the pole from us - they placed a deflector on to it which deflects phone signals from more elevated masts to the local community. They pay us €10,000 per year on a 5 year contract. We can renegotiate it after 5 years.

ESB don't pay for domestic poles. They pay approx €30 per pair of poles on high voltage lines and little more for pylons. If they are replacing/upgrading poles or pylons, they pay disturbance money, but I found that this does not cover the damage that they do to ground, hedges or drains. ESB have however rented their high voltage line which runs over my land to a broadband company. The broadband cable piggybacks the esb line. ie. its wrapped around it. Runs for about 800m on my land (2 pairs of poles) and they pay me €212 per year. But for the damage that they did the year that they installed it, I deserve that. They tramped meadows. Did serious damage to laneways with heavy machinery and just ment across country leaving openings in hedges behind them.

In 2001, my parents and I were approached by a mobile phone operator and offered €9000 per annum for site rental. They wanted to erect a mobile phone mast and have access through a small road which they would lay. We did not go for it as they wanted to site it close(100m) to the family home. Also, it would probably have caused some problems with the neighbors. I remember part of the contract stating that they could sub-let the mast to third parties, without us being payed anything extra.

The sub letting is the big one.IMO they have an agreement to use each others masts.A farmer near me let RTE put up a booster and in a few years it was covered in mobile phone transmitters.Wont do the value of his land much good.

I suppose it depends whether the land is suitable for development. As most of these masts are situated next rock and rushes I would have thought the value would be enhanced....

3 are looking at putting up a mast on our land to provide broadband coverage to our area under the NBS. When they first approached us they mentioned €4000-5000, but reading this it seems a bit low. What can we expect for a site overlooking a small village, and the majority of the local area???

If no neighbours have equally suitable locations then ask plenty.

If they won't increase then only sign a five year contract and get better terms then.

we where lucky inthat ours was really the only site available to them for the coverage to improve in that it was on a good height beside the motorway so we could ask what we liked
