How much discount on new Subaru Impreza?

    Hi Guys,
I'm new to boards.ie. Anyway, my question is this. I want to buy the new Subaru Impreza boxer diesel. I test drove the car and I absolutely love it. According to Subaru Ireland, the retail price is 21,500 euro. Now that doesn't include dealer charges ie. delivery etc.
So, according to the dealer, these extras would be about 1500 euro. So, I get a discount of the 1500 euro, and I pay the 21,500. So, I'm still paying the retail price. Now, he's only prepared to budge by maybe 1 or 200 euro. What I'm really asking is, what can I realistically hope to knock off the price?

    Thanks!

Hi Shadow Dancer and welcome to boards :)

The Subaru Impreza diesel is very well priced indeed compared to other cars. A delivery charge of €1500 is ridiculous though and the dealer rightly waved that charge. The dealer is only willing to give you another few hundred off. Normally I am first in line to put an almighty squeeze on a seller, but in this case there's probably not much room to negotiate. Give him €21k in cash and he will accept. Just about.

Delivery charges vary, but they were €600 on a new car I got about a week ago.

I'd be looking for at least 5% off the list price say €1100. So €21500, less €1100, and add delivery.

    €21000 is therefore about right.

I never have bought a car new, and personally don't think I ever will....
Can you let me know what exactly are these little options the dealer charges over the cost of the car?? I am amazed a the delivery charge? where is it getting delivered from?

According to my info from a Dublin dealer, the delivery charge on the Legacy is €350 so I'd guess that it would be the same on the Impreza. €350 is very low for a delivery charge - dealers get charged for the transport of the car from wherever it lands in the country to their site, it also takes in the cost of PDI, plates, plate surrounds, stickers etc.

Part of the €1,500 above is probably metallic paint (€300 on Carzone) so we are still €850 out on what I'd expect the OTR price to be.

I'm not sure what margin is on the new Impreza, but I'd go with Henry Ford III and say €21,000 wouldn't be a bad price.

I have seen new cars being delivered, used to get a delivery of them every week nearly, delivery cost is generally €60 from port to dealer through NVD, green tiger ect.... thats some mark up.....

Some of the cost goes to the PDI (taking up space in a service bay, and staff time if it's done properly), some for plates and branding. I suspect a large portion of the quoted "Delivery Charge" goes to profit.

thats what I am thinking, considering a lot of dealers, get the PDI done by the delivery company, NVD does this as part of their services offered, can't remember the price but it was low, very low, I think around €40 per car....

Retail price when I looked at one recently was 22,300. Talking to the sales guy he did mention (and I did actually believe him) that there was a small enough margain on that particular model. It is an awful lot of car for the money to be fair

I don't understand why delivery costs can't be built in across the board. It's another little sales trick that gives car dealers a bad name. i'm not blaming Subaru - it's across the entire motor trade.

Impreza diesel good value tho, a British colleague who is constantly bemoaning the cost of cars in Ireland was amazed when I told him a 150bhp Scooby could be got for that price.

I bought a Legacy last year - can't remember but I don't think the extra charges came to €1500. It's all academic IMO anyway - just try a few different dealers and get them to compete for the price at which you drive away.

BTW if you do buy and have any questions or want to compare notes on dealers, service etc. just PM me...

    Hi guys!
A big thanks for all your replies. He mentioned 600 euro delivery and Rosslare in the same sentence! Not sure if he said to Roslare or from, but it was definitely 600. He also mentioned those checks, is it PDI. There was a few other things.Metallic paint is 400 euro. I know I could knock that off if I didn't go for metallic. Not sure if he mentioned that as part of the 1500 though, but he did say the car would be 400 less if I didn't take it.
All in all, I do agree it's a lo of car for the money. I just wanted to get your opinions. So, once again, thanks a lot. You've been very helpful.:)

Took the plunge & bought one last week. Superb car which averages 7.8l/100km around suburbs - this will improve. This car will seriously embarass a Golf GTI - mid range torque is off the scale. Permanent 4WD, heated seats, cruise, AUX input, 6-speed, 3 yr warranty. What else do you need? Avoid the entry level alloys. Gearing is a bit high & has long-throws. You need 2nd for most slow corners and 6th is for the motorways only. Compared to a diesel Hyundai i30, it's an absolute steal.

What did you pay in total and what colour?

Did you trade in or was it straight deal?

Remap must be very tempting lol!

Map will get you up to 400nm of torque, which is like 80 more than the 2.5l turbo charged petrol WRX :)

See the price of new WRX's in the UK. Pity our road tax is so expensive.

I'd say delivery costs are a solution to accusations of price fixing - the distributor comes up with an RRP, within which there's a fixed margin.
The dealer is allowed to charge any reasonable delivery cost they're content with, depending on how they have their costs set up.

The engine will loosen up and will be even better - it comes into its own around 9,000 km onwards.

20500 with any color you like and delivery included.

shop around, you'd be surprised.... dealers not only need to make money but need to shift cars to keep the books happy.

    greater numbers... greater success.

This is true, plus they want to get more new car drivers in who require servicing etc... it all adds to the pot.

Meant to say before - read your handbook on the ECU self learning cycles and on checking the oil level - two Subaru diesel quirks for you to enjoy

Did you go for Sport or standard spec? I think standard is 16'' and Sport 17''? With decent alloys and that purposeful engine scoop I think the Impreza looks really well.

As 245 said the engine will get better and better with a bit of mileage. It's so smooth and makes a lovely noise (for a diesel;)).

I'd say some Subaru dealers are doing pretty OK ATM. They're used to selling small volumes and the introduction of ther diesel has counteracted the economic difficulties.
