Do I need a new hub or just the QR axle bit?

Em I'm not sure how it happened but I have a Trek MTB with a broken axle

The threaded hollow bit that the Quick Release squewer goes thro is snapped so the QR is all thats holding it together.

I was going to get a new hub and try building up the wheel myself but just had a thought......

if I just got another cheap shimano hub and just took the axle out of it, instead of having to switch the hub. Or how standard are they from hub to hub?

Could this work or would it just be pot luck whether it fitted or not?

    Thanks

If it was the same hub, yes. If it was a different brand/model, then it is very unlikely that they will fit.

I guess when you say "another cheap shimano hub" you mean you already have a cheap shimano hub! In that case:

If you hub is not shimano, but copies the baisc cup and cone design of shimano, take the broken parts to a bike shop and see they have an axle which fits your cones.
