Series/Season

Is there a difference between a series and a season? I always thought the series was the television show itself, and that the season was what it was made up of, but am I wrong?

Weird question, but just been wondering.

in the UK, series = what is known as a season in the US, a small set of episodes filmed and broadcast together.
i.e doctor who series 1 is the same as lost season 1.

In the US, series = the complete set of every episode
i.e. six feet under complete series

Ahh thank you. I noticed that on the Desperate Housewives boxset - the whole series but made up of different seasons.

    Was never too sure.

    Thanks.

Football has seasons, tv has series on this side of the Atlantic.
