a friend has an 02 renault master van, if he leaves it parked up for a week and returns, it will not start unless he opens the bonnet and squeezes the little black rubber thing in the fuel line..

Is this normal or is there some sort of problem?

    Thanks

Sounds like air is getting in the fuel line somewhere. Are there any leaks/smell of diesel at engine bay?

Personally I would start to take apart the fuel line upstream from the "black rubber thing" (is it a hand pump?) and replace every gasket and hose I come by if they look suspect.
